Summary

A London cycle courier with a taste for adventure, Emily Chappell entered an extraordinary new race - The Transcontinental - in which riders must find their own way, entirely unassisted, across Europe in the shortest time possible. On her second attempt, she won the women's event, covering nearly 4,000 miles in 13 days and 10 hours, sleeping in short bursts wherever exhaustion took her.

In the aftermath of a win that troubled as much as pleased her she worked with Mike Hall, the founder of the race, until his tragic death on the road.

Where There's a Will is a book about a normal person finding the capacity to do something extraordinary; the paradoxes of comradeship, competition, vulnerability and will and the shock of grief, combined in a beautifully written and very human story.

Where There's a Will, (There's a Way!)

I stumbled upon this book but it was one of my best experiences with Audible and such an easy listen. Emily Chappell not only delivered it but read it, enabling you to live part of the experience. It really takes on a language of its own and inspires you to do more than you thought you could. It ticks so many boxes for me and what a fab listen on my comings and goings! It so eloquently touches on so many areas of everyday life, its highs and lows and so beautifully deals with the death of one of our own. A fantastic book , I'd do it a huge injustice not to highly recommend it. Well done Emily Chappell and Thank you!!

Enjoyable introduction to endurance cycling.

Timing is everything. I had watched a documentary on the TransAM cycle event which had then led me to look for other things to cover long distance cycling events and found the gem that is "Where There's a Will". Enjoyed every moment of the book even those where Emily finds herself very low and very sorry for herself. I have completed long distance events (Ironman and Ultra) but not yet attempted an Audax type event. Her description of the TransCon and the people she meets, even if only for a short time, on the way showed that shared pain can be shared gain. Worth listening to for both cyclists and non-cyclists alike.

Heartfelt and Gripping

Emily writes and reads very well. An excellent exploration of human endurance, the joys of endurance competitive sport, the freedom of the open road, living in the moment, overcoming internal demons, the importance of friends and the anatomy of grief. Honest, raw and very inspiring.

Fantastic book by a fantastic cyclist

I loved this audio book so much!!!! Well written and brilliant that Emily narrated it herself. Her very British modesty sometimes makes you forget this woman is a beast on a bike, doing things I could only dream of as a keen cyclist. I took so much from this book, I laughed and I definitely cried.

So much more than a book about long bike rides

Beautifully written, beautifully read. Moving, honest, descriptive in ways I - unlike Emily - lack the vocabulary or imagination to describe. At times funny, inspiring throughout. Highly recommended.

5 stars

Hadn’t realised Emily had written a book on this chapter of her life, heard her on the never straws far (NSF) pod cast. Her short interview/conversation with Ned led me to locate this podcast. What an absolute gem of a discovery and a pleasure to listen to. Beautifully crafted and eloquently delivered. Finished the last chapter and epilogue late last night in bed, a complete emotional mess. Thanks Emily for a great a piece on f work; also thanks Ned Boulting for the introduction.

Intimate account of endurance cycling

I loved this book. I found the tales of endurance cycling very interesting and engaging. The emotional aspects were also just right in terms of being revealing and intermate but without being overwrought. Also found the author very likeable.

Really enjoyable listen

Really enjoyed listening to this and the narration by Emily herself made it all the better. The story is very cycling specific but there is a lot of other insights to gain from it. It was the perfect escape I needed.

Beautifully read

Fascinating insight into endurance riding, and wonderfully written. I really enjoyed Emily's eloquent narration. I have ordered her other book off the back of this one.
