Summary

Poor Belladonna longs to be an evil enchantress - but how? A wonderful mad, delightful adventure from the author of The Journey to the River Sea.

"Find me a witch!" cries Arriman the Awful, feared Wizard of the North. Arriman has decided to marry. His wife must be a witch of the darkest powers - but which witch will she be? To find the most fiendish, he holds a spell-casting competition.

Glamorous Madame Olympia performs the terrifying Symphony of Death and conjures up a thousand plague-bearing rats. But the magic of gentle Belladonna, the white witch, goes hopelessly wrong. She produces perfumed flowers instead of snakes. And bats roost in her golden hair instead of becoming blood-sucking vampires.

Ageless and perfect for any age.

I am 43 and still love this book. It is absolutely ageless and timeless. A definite winner for children but also enjoyable for adults. I throughly enjoy the audio book. Prunella Scales is a wonderful narrator and she really does this book justice. Considering this book was written in the Seventies it is still a fresh and unusual story that hasn't been repeated. Honestly, if you are considering using a credit to get this book, you won't regret it. It is definitely a book the whole family can enjoy.

Enthralling and funny children's book

The whole family enjoyed listening to this one, and my husband drove extra slowly on weekend car journeys as he too was hooked. Good for adults and children of any age (ours are 5 & 9 and both loved it). Brilliantly written with great characters. Very funny but also suspenseful. Adults will guess how the book will end, but it will keep your children hooked til the end. Having read the book already, I preferred the abridged version of the audio book as I felt that the narrator's voice was more engaging than the unabridged version. The abridged version is extremely well read, with the narrator doing different voices for each character to facilitate following the story line. Highly recommended for girls and boys and grown ups.
