Critic reviews

"An enthralling adventure story, honest and powerful. The Wars of the Roses are imagined here with energy, with ferocity, with hunger to engage the [listener]." (Hilary Mantel)

Gripping storyline - a bit bloodthirsty though!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, as long as they don't mind lots of graphic violence.
This is a real page-turner (except I was listening rather than reading), and on a couple of occasions I ended up sitting in the car after reaching my destination because I wanted to find out what happened next.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The lead character, Thomas, as the changes to his character occur more slowly and more naturally than they do for Catherine.

What about Jack Hawkins’s performance did you like?

The performance is exceptional - there is real feeling given to the roles he performs, and the various characters are narrated consistently.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The violent scene between Thomas and the giant by the upturned boat - I could feel the pain and fear.

Any additional comments?

I was left wondering at the end - it finished quite abruptly in my view, and there were loose ends which need tying off. Is there a sequel by any chance?

Bloody good

This is extremely gory, but also beautiful, erudite and enjoyable. A love story, and one of the most vivid depictions of life in Tudor times that I have ever come across. The reading is excellent.

Boys Own historical drama

As if the Wars of the Roses wasn't complicated enough . . . . . . ! I wasn't a great deal wiser about the machinations of the nobles in this conflict but I did enjoy the book. Lots of good goodies and evil baddies , plenty of treachery, violence, and blood and a frisson of sex. Super heroine Kate who understood the art of war instinctively , learned to read in a few hours and mastered the art of surgery and all before she was 16 years old. Wow!
All a little lightweight despite, what I am certain was intensive research, but engaging and I did follow it with the next in the series , although I think I will leave it a while before tackling the third in the series

Excellent

Great story, well told. Well researched too. Captures the landscape brilliantly and submerges the reader in the 15th century during an awful period of English history.

Really Great Listen

Really liked this book, a great story and good narration .. already listened to book 2 without any skipping through drab script in either book and just downloaded book 3 which hopefully will be the same..

Great stuff

What a great listen. Would recommend to anyone. Book lost momentum in the final 3rd for me after a great opening and a moody middle. I think this write has something special when he sets up countryside scenes of slow paced build up and small action set pieces but not so much big old battles. I’ll defiantly be moving into the second book now!
