Summary

The first two limbs of the eight-fold path of yoga sutras - the basic text for classical yoga - are examined in this spiritual guide to the practice of yoga. Foundational to all yogic thought, they are considered to be the guidelines to the yoga way of living that free individuals to take ownership of their lives, direct them toward the fulfillment they seek, and gain the skills to choose attitude, thought, and action.

The first five guidelines are referred to as the yamas - a Sanskrit word that translates to "restraints" - and encompass nonviolence, truthfulness, not stealing, nonexcess, and nonpossessiveness. The last five are referred to as the niyamas, or observances - purity, contentment, self-discipline, self-study, and surrender.

A gem of a book. Invaluable.

Deborah Adele's "The Yamas and Niyamas" is a beautiful and inspiring exploration of the first two limbs of yoga sutras. The author's teaching made me think of and connect with the yamas and niyamas in a way I had never experienced before. I most enjoyed the journalling prompts and self-study suggestions after every chapter.
This is a gem of a book I would highly recommend to anyone interested in becoming more aware and present in their life - regardless of whether they practice yoga.
Thank you, Deborah Adele, for creating such a beautiful source of learning, exploration and (self)understanding.

Insightful & inspirational

There hasn't been many books or audiobooks I've picked up & couldn't put down, I guess this had something to do with my journey into yoga & currently doing teacher training.

I found this book to be a perfect introduction to the ethics of yoga, it's yamas & Niyamas are beautifully written & delivered with easy relatable & understandings points to the somewhat complexities that come with opening your heart, mind & perceptions to day to day life.

The chapter explorations of enriching & leave you with awareness insight to think about.

Overall this book is excellent for people practicing Yoga & want to know more of it ethics but also as a gentle read, audio book or physical copy this will be a book you return to again & again.

Interesting view and perspectiva

Current approach to a classic guide. Like the stories. It is a deep perspective of oneself. It will actually change you, to be more in the moment, to live it as it is, so we don't have regrets. To be more real, to be brave I am going to make something with it to share it with my Yoga / coaching clients Thank you Deborah xxx

Annoying voice

Annoying voice detracts from interesting content for me. Good detail and exercises in each chapter.
