  • 136: Resting the Ayurvedic Way: Ancient Wisdom for Modern Relaxation
    Jan 25 2025

Today, on Episode #136 of the Habit Thrive Podcast, we’re continuing our theme of rest by exploring why we may have trouble resting in our Me Now Years.

Part of the problem is that we sometimes mix up the terms “relax” and “rest.”

For example, you may relax at the end of the day by:

    • Reading a book
    • Watching TV
    • Scrolling social media

    But are you really “resting?”

Sure, you’re likely sitting or lying down. But your eyes are working - likely straining to read or watch a screen - and your mind is moving.

Not super restful, after all. At least, not for me.

That is not to say you can’t do these things with your leisure time.

But be careful that you don’t get sucked into the activity and wind up over-indulging.

So, what does help you rest?

    • A nap?
    • A meditation?
    • Yoga
    • A leisurely walk?

Any of these, really, could be restful for your mind, body and spirit.

Start experimenting with what works for you by delving into your dosha and how that factors in to your rest.

    1. Banyan Botanicals Dosha Quiz
    2. In Ayurveda, the term “Prajñāparādha” (pronounced praj-nyah-pah-rah-dha) refers to “the crime against wisdom” or “mistake of the intellect.” It describes the situation where an individual knowingly engages in behaviors or actions that are harmful, despite having the wisdom or awareness that they are not beneficial. • 134: Rest and Reset: One Simple Habit to Let go and Refresh
    Jan 11 2025

It’s nighttime, and you are winding down for the day.

What habits or routines do you have to shake off the day and prepare yourself for sleep?

    • Washing your face and brushing your teeth
    • Taking a bubble bath with essential oils
    • Drinking a cup of chamomile tea
    • Reading
    • Meditating
    • Listening to a podcast

    How about journaling?

Journaling to let go of your day.

This week, on Episode #134 of the Habit Thrive Podcast, we are discussing this one habit that has the potential for great benefits when it comes to resting and resetting from your day.

Ask yourself: “What would I like to let go of from today?”

It could be a conversation you had that left you feeling rattled.

Or maybe it’s an un-made decision you have been stressing over all day.

It could be unfinished items on your to-do list.

Or perhaps just a worry, thought, or emotion you have been burdened with.

It could be one thing, or a few things, or even a whole laundry list of things that have you feeling tense and unable to let go into sleep.

Whatever it is for you, try writing it down - or just saying it out loud.

Then, choose to let that go for now:

    • Say out loud that you’re letting it go
    • Close your eyes and think about letting it go
    • Picture the stressors of your day floating away
    • Crumple up your piece of paper and throw it in the trash
    • Close the journal and put it away for tomorrow

Experiment with all of these approaches and see which ones work best for you.

    Take a deep breath.

    Release the tension.

    Relax, rest, and let go.

    Until tomorrow…

  • 133: Embracing January Themes, Goals, Habit and Routines
    Jan 4 2025

    Welcome to 2025, Habit Thrivers!

A new year, a new chapter, and a new chance to embrace our awesomeness!

Kicking off this new year with the Habit Thrive Podcast, we are chatting about seasonal themes and how, as we progress through the next few weeks of January, we will connect goals, routines and rituals.

So, instead of declaring a goal or resolution for 2025, think about what your theme for the year should be:

    • Prioritizing time with friends and family
    • Focusing on a healthier lifestyle
    • Trying new things
    • Saying “no” more often (or saying “yes”!)

Then, break down the year into 3 seasons of 4 months each, and create a theme or focus for each month.

Right now, we are starting - of course - with January.

For me, January is a month of Rest and Reset.

For my body, I’m choosing “active rest” … restorative, flowing yoga that is low-intensity but sets the tone for the year.

I’m also focusing on easy, hearty nutrition like warm, nourishing soups, stews and casseroles.

For my mind, I’m journaling and planning the upcoming months and seasons:

    • Making to-do lists
    • Planning trips or treats
    • Noting events I want to attend

And I’m taking a little extra time for meditation and really connecting with the season.

For you, January may be a month of Resurgence.

You may feel you need some high-intensity workouts in order to break out of the sluggish post-holiday funk.

There’s no wrong way to create and embrace your perfect January theme.

    Dec 28 2024

Welcome to the final podcast of 2024, Habit Thrivers!

Today, on Episode #132, we are coming up with our personalized recipe for calm.

The feeling of calm doesn’t just happen TO us … it is something we can intentionally create.

When we recognize what situations, activities and scenarios make us feel calm, we can use them to proactively ground ourselves, creating a sense of control and resilience no matter what life throws our way!

Try this recipe for calm out yourself - and don’t forget to tweak it to be personalized for YOUR feeling of calm!

    INGREDIENTS**:

    - 1 Room Full of Laughter

    - 1 Feeling of Comfort

    - A Well-Rested Body

    - A Dash of Optimism

    - A Sprinkle of Peace

    DIRECTIONS:

Carefully fold ingredients together in a space free of clutter (may be filled with family and friends). For best results, be present in the moment.

  • 131: The Elusive Search for Balance—And Why It’s Overrated (Especially Over the Holidays)
    Dec 21 2024

    Balance.

It’s the holy grail of self-help advice. The thing we’re told to strive for in our work, our relationships, and even our holiday traditions.

    And it’s overrated.

On Episode #131 of the Habit Thrive Podcast, I’m inviting you to rethink what it means to “have it all together” during the holiday season and beyond.

Instead of balance, we’re going to try shifting focus, embracing seasons of life, and making space for what really matters right now.

During this holiday season, when there are gifts to buy, meals to cook, traditions to uphold, and an endless stream of events to attend, I want you to prioritize flow over balance.

Flow is about recognizing that life has seasons, and within those seasons, our priorities naturally shift.

Flow might mean letting go of some of your usual routines in favor of traditions that matter most.

Or, it might mean saying “no” to certain invitations so you can say “yes” to quiet nights with your family—or even just some much-needed alone time.

When you shift your mindset from balance to flow, you’re not abandoning your responsibilities, you’re simply accepting that they don’t all need equal attention right now. And that’s okay!

Life isn’t about holding everything perfectly in place—it’s about knowing when to lean into one area and let go of another.

  • 130: A Grounding Ritual for More Calm and More Joy
    Dec 14 2024

Last week on the Habit Thrive Podcast, we talked about using rituals and routines to create more joy in our holiday season.

On Episode #130 today, I’m giving you a short ritual to try that is meant to create calm and open up space for more joy.

This grounding practice can be done nearly anywhere at any time, and you can feel free to use whatever parts of it speak to you in the moment.

    We’re going to G.R.O.U.N.D. ourselves:

    • G - Ground
    • R - Raise our Arms
    • O - Open our Chest
    • U - Unwind
    • N - Notice our Surroundings
    • D - Deepen our Breath

    G - Ground

From a standing position, distribute your weight equally on both legs.

Feel yourself connected to the ground through your feet and into your heels and toes.

    Feel your shoulders relax.

You may even try 3 or 4 heel bumps: Lift your heels up off the ground and “bump” them back down to your grounded position.

This helps to relax your shoulders and remind your brain that it’s time to get out of your own head.

    R - Raise our Arms

Start with your arms by your side.

As you inhale, raise your arms up - arms shoulder distance apart, palms facing in - to shoulder level or higher.

On the exhale, lower your arms quickly, bend your knees, and release your breath with a “ha”.

    O - Open our Chest

When we open our chest, we open our heart.

All you have to do to open your chest is just to lift your chest a little.

Tip: Try tapping just below the collarbone. This reminds you to lift your chest and as a bonus helps with posture!

On the inhale, open your chest with a little lift.

On the exhale, let your shoulders drop.

    U - Unwind

Unwind using a progressive muscle relaxation technique.

Bring your shoulders up toward your ears as you inhale, and hold them in place for a couple of seconds.

As you exhale, let your shoulders relax.

You can try this with any part of your body that feels tension. Try balling up your fists on the inhale and releasing the tension in your hands and fingers on the exhale.

    N - Notice

Notice your surroundings - What do you see, hear, smell, taste and feel?

This places you in the present moment, taking you away from your worries and thoughts.

    D - Deepen our Breath

This is simply a mindful pracrtice of deepening and lengthening our exhalations.

Take a breath in, and a long breath out through your mouth or nose.

On each breath, try to extend the exhale as you feel yourself being more grounded.

This is a great one to do just before you let go into sleep.

Try grounding yourself with this practice - in its entirety, or just whatever part calls to you - and open yourself up to more joy in this (or any) season!
