Thirty years ago, a group of five child detectives - Tommy, Luke, Tess, Jane and Daniel, along with their dog, Dexter - made the national press with their crime solving. When an old friend of DI Declan Walsh is murdered and an old enemy restarts their vendetta against him, Walsh is placed in charge of solving the case alongside his fellow detectives in the Last Chance Saloon Crime Unit, realising in the process that somewhere in Whitehall, a new narrative is being written for the murder; one where the dead body is leaked to the press as an extremist terrorist, and Declan is being set up to be revealed as not only their terrorist handler in the UK, but also the prime suspect for the murder.

When a body is found beside the Roman Fort Gate on the London Wall, dressed as a Roman Soldier and with an antique Roman Gladius stabbed into their chest, it's tasked to DCI Declan Walsh and the team of the Last Chance Saloon to investigate the murder, leading them into a rabbit hole of similarly themed attacks - as re-enactors perform real-life battles at various locations for a "History of London" celebration during the day, with some taking a darker and more brutal approach at night.

AD 381. Five years have gone by since a Roman governor ordered the deaths of a Gothic king and his attendants at a feast in their honor. This disastrous act led to warfare in the Roman Empire and the death of the Emperor Valens.
