Summary

The thrilling saga that began in The Pillars of the Earth and World Without End, which continues with Ken Follett's magnificent, masterful A Column of Fire.

A World in Turmoil

1558, and Europe is in revolt as religious hatred sweeps the continent. Elizabeth Tudor has ascended to the throne but she is not safe in this dangerous new world. There are many who would see her removed, not least Mary Queens of Scots, who lies in wait in Paris.

A New Order

Elizabeth determines to set up a new secret service: a group of resourceful spies and courageous agents entrusted to keep her safe and in power. As she searches for those who will make the difference, one man stands out.

A Man Who Would Die for His Queen

For Ned Willard the opportunity to serve his queen is God-sent. He cannot stay in Kingsbridge and watch the love of his life marry another, and as fires burn and extremism begins to spark throughout Europe, Ned makes his choice. He will spend his life protecting his monarch from the tyrants who aim to destroy her or die trying . . .

Another brilliant book by Ken Follett

A wonderful book, full of Follett's intricate storyline and complicated relationships. The narration by John Lee is superb as usual.

A shame it’s finished..

So sorry to have finished listening to this book. I know a little of Elizabeth 1st from history lessons and reading, but was very interested by the way the author weaves in happenings in France, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands and his sympathetic explanations of both Protestant and Catholic attitudes at the time. Most enjoyable, and what a great narrator!

Wonderful

Wonderful, occasionally slightly monotonous in parts, however, I could not wait for the next page, the next listen.

Fab

Loved all of this series, thanks to John Lee for a majestic performance throughout, a real storyteller. You need in my humble opinion to start with pillars of the earth, but each could be satisfying as a stand alone. This series is a towering achievement.

A great sequel

I had become totally immersed in the parties in the cast. So succinctly written yet all encompassing. No boring flannel but yet each person's character became so quietly clear and the reader made to care.
I would love to write like Ken Follett

fantastic

perhaps a little slower than pillars of the earth but still a great listen. Would absolutely recommend. Its not necvesary to have listened to the previous two novels (it only makes vague callbacks to them) but honestly, youd really be missing out.

The best one so far

I've read all Ken Follett's Kingsbridge books and this is the best in terms of scale, characters and plot. Its a great period in time to play with and he really expands the horizon of the story to take in other countries. Loved it.
