Summary
When a massive storm surge hits the central coast of California, the ferocious surf destroys buildings, floods streets, and washes up something sinister from the depths of the Monterey Bay.
Peter, a retired state lifeguard, knows the water better than anyone. Carla, owner of a beach-side restaurant, is still mourning the loss of her son in a boating accident. Brilliant
Loved every bit of this book. Finished it in one sitting. The characters were well rounded, the story was well paced and the monsters were unique and terrifying. Great book. Highly recommend.

A gripping, thrilling listen
This is my first book by the author, and won't be the last. This ticked a lot of boxes for me - small town, coastal setting, stormy, creature feature - so my excitement was high going in, and I'm glad to be able to say that the story lived up to it.
I want to avoid spoiling any of the story, as I had a blast going in blind, but if the synopsis appeals to you then this will be one you want to bump up your TBR. I was concerned at first that too many characters were going to be introduced, but the focus narrows on a select few as the story goes on, and I enjoyed spending time with all of them.
The writing was excellent. Often a story around inclement weather or creatures can live or die by the descriptions, but both are handled deftly here, Castaneda does a wonderful job of creating imagery and making you feel the full force of the storm. I can't say the book scared me necessarily, but there were plenty of tense moments, and I found myself constantly thinking "just one more chapter" - always a great sign.
