Summary

When historian Jaya Jones receives a mysterious package containing a jewel-encrusted artifact, she discovers the secrets of a lost Indian treasure may be hidden in a Scottish legend. But she's not the only one on the trail.

From San Francisco to the Highlands of Scotland, Jaya must evade a shadowy stalker, as she follows hints from the hastily scrawled note to a remote archaeological dig. Helping her decipher the cryptic clues are her magician best friend, a devastatingly handsome art historian with something to hide, and a charming archaeologist running for his life. When a member of the dig's crew is murdered, Jaya must figure out which of the scholars vying for her affections might be the love of her life - and which one is a killer.

Don't Do The Accent!!

Love the author's Alchemist series so was very disappointed with Jaya Jones. The story was convoluted and contrived, characters unconvincing and not one with any redeeming features.
As for the narration, it was SO bad. Dick Van Dyke bad. You'd think they would have used an actor who could actually do accents. It was teeth grindingly painful to listen to. Will not bother with the rest of the series and return to the excellent Alchemist stories.

Sadly the narration was too bad

I loved all of the Alchemist books, so hoped I’d love this as much for lighthearted escapism. I’m Scottish, so used to non Scots doing scents and it doesn’t bother me, however I got far too distracted by the narrator switching between what on the odd occasion sounded Scottish, but it was more Irish mainly, often even Indian sounding and the accents changed as the sentence went on. It’s such a shame as it really shouldn’t matter, but in this instance if you’re going to do a Scottish accent, make sure you can, or maybe just don’t do the accent at all? It’s put me off trying others sadly. If you don’t get distracted by accents, then you might be OK. I really wanted to like it as the subject matter was really interesting, if a little history lessonish at times. But I quite liked that.

enjoyable book, dreadful accents!

on the whole I enjoyed the book, although not as much as the 'accidental alchemist' series. the really bad part was the dreadful attempt at Scottish accents by the narrator. the other accents were ok, but please, if there's an accent you can't do don't even try! It really spoils the experience.

You can't love em all a

Having listened to Pandian's Accidental Alchemist series I was looking forward to this book , I was extremely disappointed. The main character is annoying beyond all reason. She is supposed to be an academic but there's little evidence of that. She is supposed to be a modern woman who stands on her own feet yet she surroundings herself with men. This is in itself not a bad thing, but she comes over as a damsel in distress. As for the narrator, if you are going to set your story in a country that has a very distinct accent then at least make sure the person who is going to read the story can do a decent attempt at that accent. Needless to say I won't be reading the rest of the books in the series.

I just can't listen anymore -

loved the previous books by this author and have battled through to about half way with this one but the narration is unbearablly bad and I think I'll have to stop listening as it is just getting worse... hopefully it might be redone with a different narrator?

Terrible accents!

I am enjoying the story, but unfortunately the English/Scottish accents are really badly done... it’s pretty distracting!

Mystery

This is the first book I’ve read by Gigi but not the last. The twist and turns thought the book kept me glued to the story. I will definitely continue this series.

Keeps you entertained

Both the story and the reading are alright, although, one can feel (by listening/reading) to other Gigi' books how the author's has grown over the years and the books evolved and mature with their (Gigi) writing. This is my sixth of their books I've read, and while, 'The Artifact', it keeps you entertained, it feels cringey at times (or perhaps I'm getting old) as it is a bit juvenil. Perhaps the book itself has the narrative differently and is the audio version? Nonetheless, the idea for the story is nice and the plot too, perhaps just the development is a bit off.

Really awful accents

Hard to listen to though story ok. Accents were truly bad, especially for anyone British.

Good read

This is a great story but performance was full of terrible attempts at British accents with mispronunciations. You have to ignore them to enjoy the actual story.
