Summary

There's a girl at their school who is always ill. She routinely arrives late, leaves early, or doesn't show up at all, and skips gym as a matter of course. She's pretty, and the boys take to whispering that she's a cloistered princess. As the self-described worst loser in her class soon finds out, they just don't know what a monster she is.

So begins a tale of mysterious maladies that are supernatural in origin yet deeply revealing of the human psyche, a set of case files as given to unexpected feeling as it is to irreverent humor. So begins the legendary novel that kicked off the MONOGATARI series, whose anime adaptations have enjoyed international popularity and critical acclaim.

This first of three parts introduces Senjogahara and Hachikuji, and fans of the blockbuster prequel KIZUMONOGATARI will be delighted to meet their favorite crazies again: the weirdly reliable narrator Araragi, class president among class presidents Hanekawa, shady problem-solver Oshino, and a certain pale, blonde former vampire.

for the first volume it's great

bakemonogatari is one of "those" pieces of otaku culture that is so beloved by the fans that it is still talked about years after its release and remembered fondly for many reasons so going into the English adaptation of the novel series of such a work is going to be hard, it's got so much to live up to that you'll often get discouraged from going in as "how can it ever be as good as the title I know"

luckily this does nearly everything well and gets the story and characters down well, the only small issue is that with this series there are a lot of jokes in the word use that have no direct English translation so at points descriptions can feel bloated but it's a tiny price to pay for a decent adaptation
very worth the price

More please!

If your into the supernatural you need to listen to these. The series was recommended to me by a friend and I bought over a few years all the animé for it. However I have never had time to sit and watch them as they are not in English dub so would need my actual concentration. On the other hand these are excellently translate and highly involving.

This is such a good series, I'm so pleased that these are comming out. Please continue to release the entire series! The writing, translation and voice acting is all brilliant. I love the commentary from the author at the end of each book, it for some reason really adds to the work and your left feeling like the author would make a very interesting friend.

They should use these voice actors for a dub of the anime! the story is very fun but also has some safe themes

If you found this book, you'll love it

The narration is top notch: It has Aggretsko, Hawkmoth and Marionette If this founds its way into your recommended books, give it a go Worst case scenario, its only 6 hours, so you'd still have 10 hours if you got a goodnight sleep

Great Manga Feeling in an Audiobook form!

I loved the voice actors for this audiobook. Very immersive and exactly what I was looking for when searching (with difficulty I might add) for audio books with that Manga/Graphic Novel feel. Although this may sound like it defeats the purpose, it really doesn’t. Instead of seeing the images, it lets your mind create your own and plays out better than I thought. Wasn’t so keen on the pedophilia aspect that kept being repeated - thought that probably wasn’t really needed… (nobody wants to hear about an older teenage boy touching or commenting on a barely pubescent child, well nobody that isn’t exactly that, a pedophile) so for that reason I knocked off a star for the overall story. Disregarding that aspect though, I really loved the listen!

Weird and not great value for credit

Having watched the monogatari series (subbed), I was excited to see this in audible and was interested to check it out.

The accents are very American, which is quite jarring and frankly a bit lazy in this day and age. The translation is a bit off, which make it come across really weird, the constant references to 'not being a pedophile' over and over is just really odd. I assume it was meant to be 'lolicon', which is not quite the same thing. Lastly, this is actually very short for an audible credit, so it's not good value.

I would say, if you're a fan of the series, take the plunge and see if it works for you. It's just not for me.
