Summary

Small businesses can think big... here's how.

Are you struggling to find marketing ideas for your small business? Does your business plan consist of a few scribbles on the back of a napkin? Does the thought of learning “online marketing” scare you? Do you find traditional business books dull, or uninspiring? Have you read business biographies of the poster boys (Richard Branson, Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Alan Sugar, Elon Musk, Steve Jobs etc), only to feel a sense of overwhelm, and a complete disconnect between what they achieved, and where you are right now? Do you want to grow your small business, without having to learn complex marketing strategies, and without being told to simply “work harder than everyone else”? If so, then Big Ideas... for Small Businesses could be the “lightbulb moment” you’ve been waiting for....

Former civil servant John Lamerton has run more than 60 small businesses since 2000, making millions of pounds, and thousands of mistakes along the way. This book is a collection of the lessons and successes that he uses to coach and mentor hundreds of small business owners, teaching them to think bigger, work less, and design their business around the lifestyle they want. Some of the big ideas that you will discover:

  • Why the “Dragons” hate lifestyle businesses, and why you should love them.
  • How almost anyone could become a millionaire in their lifetime, given just £200 a month.
  • Why John blames Richard Branson for his early failures.
  • How to get clarity on your business strategy, and bring that into your daily routine.
  • How to sell a dozen eggs for over £500.
  • The one thing that truly transformed John’s business.
  • How to find, hire, (and fire!) your first employee.
  • Why every Luke Skywalker needs a Yoda.
  • Exactly how he made over £100k from one marketing campaign.
  • The five magic ingredients for success in almost any given field.

John Lamerton is a lazy entrepreneur and investor. He balances running an ambitious lifestyle business with raising two young children. A former “hustler”, he now earns more money “working” 20 to 25 hours a week than he used to pulling all-nighters and “grinding” for 100+ hours per week. He now mentors fellow ambitious lifestyle business owners, teaching them how to design their business around their lifestyle.

Highly highly HIGHLY recommended

I've listened to over 20 personal/biz development books and this is definitely in my top 3. It somehow found me just at the right time as I now feel I have some clarity in the reason WHY I own my own business. Don't choose this book if you want to be a billionaire or the next Branson. if you're a normal business owner that needs a bit of direction (and a kick up the arse), there are some real gems here, especially if you're struggling with the work/life balance.

Enjoy!

A refreshing reminder of what matters

I really enjoyed this audiobook, from John’s enthusiasm, simple approach and not being afraid to use the word “lifestyle business”. I’ve run my own lifestyle business for over a decade and it’s almost been a dirty word in networking. The nuggets in each chapter provide clear examples and takeaways for you to digest and implement. It’s great for learning new ideas, reminding you what you already know and getting on actually taking action. I found it was the kickstart that I needed to get back into 90 day plans, start running again and ensure my team understand the values of my company - what more can I say about John and his fantastic book!

5 stars all the way!

Loved every bit of the way! Every sentence matters! Familiar topics in a completely new light. I place him up there with Steven Covey and Tony Robbins!

A no-nonsense kick up the arse!

I did really enjoy this book, and I guess I'm at a time in my life where a 'lifestyle business' suddenly looks a lot more like what I'd like to achieve. John sells his concept in a very strong way and I agree that too many people are working towards that million to the detriment of family, friends, relationships, and that we could all do with taking a leaf out of John's book.

I had to giggle at the review below marking the book down for being 'manly' - guess what....John is a man, he has a man's point of view on life. Nothing misogynistic here - there are plenty of female authors writing business books solely for female entrepreneurs and nobody is calling them sexist.

Only reason it wasn't top marks from me is because it fell in to the same old trap - selling great ideas and inspirational tips, backed up by the fact that the author is an established multi-millionaire who lives the lifestyle we want to achieve, and then spoiling it all in the last chapter with a ridiculous "join my Facebook group for £97 per month" pitch. The author referred to Richard Branson as a freak of nature, but he's also someone who writes self-help books without trying to pitch his time for £97 per month. That's my only complaint really, and didn't stop me from actioning a lot of the advice, just cheapened it a bit.

Changed my life

I don’t really know where to start with this review, I never leave reviews but I really wanted to on this one as Big Idea’s and Routine Machine has pretty much changed my life.

First thing I would say is I’ve listen to a lot of books on audible about Routine, Habits, Productivity, High Performance, Early Birds, etc but nothing has been as good as these books, I would even say they don’t even come close. What I like about these books are the homework tasks about not putting the book down and doing nothing about it and just moving on to the next book . I listen to John on audible as I was training for the London marathon at the time so when I couldn’t be bothered going for a run this book gave me that little bit extra as I was looking forward to what John was going to say next. When I liked an idea, I would get out my phone and type it in my notes, this wasn’t easy trying to carry on running whilst trying to look where I’m going and add a note.

When I first listen to John’s audible I was working as employed as a mortgage and protection broker, I was working long hours but was falling out of love with the job. I wanted to love the job I do again because if you love the job you do you never work a day in your life as they say. The biggest problem I had was I wanted to work for myself so I could make my own rules and this book gave me the confidence I needed and put routines in place so I could get the work done routinely and have more time to spend with my family. I used this book to prepare myself from going from employed to self-employed and now that I stared this adventure it’s help me plan out how to do stuff the right way from the start.

I’m really grateful that John wrote these books, this is just my story but these books could help a lot of people.

I’m looking forward to what the future hold for me. Wish me luck!

Thanks John.

Great insights and ideas

John narrates all his books passionately and with many anecdotes along the way. You can see these are real situations and he is sharing those with us. Good or bad. I originally got this book after listening to his more recent book: Evergreen Assets. This “Big ideas” book is more suited to my situation as a small business owner. There are many valid points that I will need to put into actions such as to start a mailing list and craft emails with a CTA rather than a “get back to me for more info” line. Thanks John for sharing your experience with us.

Really good for small business owners

I have enjoyed this book a lot. It’s got so much helpful advice to small busses owners. I have listened to the Audi book now twice. And taken a lot from it.
I’m now on the Facebook group and podcast to keep going with the implementation.
