Story
A deal goes bad...and Van Delano is left to die in the desert. But most folk say he’s been cursed with a double-barreled shotgun of mulishness. So, when his first attempt at bargaining for his kidnapped sister’s freedom lands him with a dead horse, a bullet in his leg, and miles of desert between him and the nearest town, he’s not about to give up. He’ll fight and claw, cheat and steal, even kill, if he has to.

Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible. In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground. The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot.

Digby Graves, a deceased medieval peasant with delusions of grandeur, is trying to figure out how the hell he ended up in Seattle 800 years after his death. Also, why does he have necrotic magic coursing through his zombified body? Added to that is the fact that he made a terrible first impression the moment he woke up by lunging at the first person that came into biting range. Jin Rou wanted to be a cultivator. A man powerful enough to defy the heavens. A master of martial arts. A lord of spiritual power. Unfortunately for him, he died, and now I’m stuck in his body. Arrogant Masters? Heavenly Tribulations? All that violence and bloodshed? Yeah, no thanks. I’m getting out of here. Farm life sounds pretty great. Tilling a field by hand is fun when you’ve got the strength of ten men—though maybe I shouldn’t have fed those Spirit Herbs to my pet rooster.

Summary
In the West, there are worse things to fear than bandits and outlaws.
Demons. Monsters. Witches. James Crowley’s sacred duty as a Black Badge is to hunt them down and send them packing, banish them from the mortal realm for good.
He didn’t choose this life. No. He didn’t choose life at all.
Shot dead in a gunfight many years ago, now he’s stuck in purgatory, serving the whims of the White Throne to avoid falling to Hell. Not quite undead, though not alive either, the best he can hope for is to work off his penance and fade away.
This time, the White Throne has sent him to investigate a strange bank robbery in Lonely Hill. An outlaw with the ability to conjure ice has frozen and shattered open the bank vault and is now on a spree, robbing the region for all it’s worth.
In his quest to track down the ice-wielder and suss out which demon is behind granting a mortal such power, Crowley finds himself face-to-face with hellish beasts, shapeshifters, and, worse…temptation. But the truth behind the attacks is worse than he ever imagined.…
The Witcher meets The Dresden Files in this weird Western series by the Audible number one bestselling duo behind Dead Acre.
Critic reviews
“A weird and wild twist on the Old West that mashes gunslingers, divine intervention, and the supernatural into one hell of a story. Highly recommended!” Jonathan Maberry, New York Times bestselling author of V-Wars and Kagen the Damned

ok story, female voices are a joke
narrators protagonist voice was perrffect! but the females had a deeper voice than the males. this narrator really cannot do female voices. they sounded like pre-op transvestites.
story was a solid 5/10. nothing amazing.
the powers of the protagonist are exactly the same as a boring zombie. the author could have improved him like Helo in the Ash angels Narrated by RC bray.
I was going to get my credit refunded but as I enjoyed some parts, I will not. have completed this title on 26 May 2022. so within 2 days of it coming out.

Looking forward to the next installment
A brilliant fantasy/noir story that keeps you hooked with great action. Roger Clarke does a great job of portraying the different male characters and monsters, but I think it would be best to maybe get a female VA/narrator in for parts like Rosa as his female voices are pretty rough to get through, especially when he's trying to speak Spanish.
Overall though, a very strong first book in the series and I'm very excited for the next one.

Brilliant story and performance!
A wonderful story and very unique. I enjoyed it from start to finish. The performance by Roger Clark was incredible. As a female it’s great to listen to a male narrator who doesn’t make every female character sound like Minnie Mouse. Realistic and gripping performance, absolutely loved it!

Saints and Elders, that was good!
I've been anxiously awaiting this title since Dead Acre released a year or so ago. That novella blew me away and, like so many, I thought James Crowley's story needed more. When Cold As Hell was released, I did everything possible to get ahold of an early copy. Somehow, I was lucky and succeeded.
This story exceeds all expectations I had and my only regret is having to wait so long for book two!
Roger Clark has to be the best narrator alive. He reads like a dream.
If you like Jim Butcher/The Dresden Files, don't even hesitate. This will take its place when Harry retires.

Best book I've read this year!
I wasn't surprised how much I liked this based on the synopsis, but I was surprised how fast I blew through it. The narrator, from Red Dead Redemption fame, is the perfect voice for Crowley. He has that rough, gruff tone that fits the MC like no other.
The plot is also fantastic with plenty of monsters and demons that test the battle-hardened warrior. I've seen this novel compared to The Witcher, but honestly, I think this book is better. I love Crowley and his outlook on life, and death. Grab this one, you won't regret it! I can't wait for more!

Amazing!
Castle and Bruno work well together. There is a perfect mix of world building, action and storytelling in this book. The pilot was great and this continues that same line of quality. Clark is a great narrator in the same light as Bray or Boyett but he really shines here.

Arthur Morgan
I loved this book so much, Rhett bruno and Jaime castle did so good writing this book. I can't wait for book 2.
Roger Clark deserves an award for how good he did with this book, I loved rdr2 and I loved Arthur Morgan, with me hearing Roger it brought back alot of nostalgia. The thing that surprised me is how good a narrator Roger was, He has a variety of different voices and he can do a really good Spanish accent. I can't wait for more performances with Roger.
When I comes too character's I love them, I loved the Mc. he's down too business and he just reminds me of Arthur Morgan. James is written really well and there's nothing bad about him, I also like the side characters. There not annoying or anything like that, there written very will like James and the all a unique personality that fits them.
Character development is okay, I can say that James and other characters changed in this book and I can also say the James had some depth too him.
Abilities,
I love James Abilities there not much but I still like them. He's not some op God or something like that. He's just a dang good shooter. (plus he's immortal)
it's not much but i still consider this a dang good fantasy book.
Plot wise this book is a 5 star without anything else.
I loved the plot and I thinks it's one of this books strongsuits, it really drawed me into it and I was on my toes listening and Roger Clark just added too it. Another thing that adds to the plot is the foreshadowing. I loved it, the suspense before something happened, it paired very well with Roger Clark's raspy voice. The story itself is also really good, i love it.... The Midwestern setting is so awesome, it's something I didn't know I needed, you can't find much good western books and this one is a good western book.
world building and detail are also good. It's explained very well and I love the way the world plays out with all its glory. The world is built very well and it's so awesome.
One more than one occasion I thought I was listening too the book version of rdr2.
I also love how's there christianity in this book but the author doesn't push religious beliefs onto us or anything like that.
When it comes too action, I love it. the Midwestern style action and the shootouts it's just way to much. it has alot of action in it and I never got enough, I can't wait for book 2 just too hear more!!!.
That was also a banger cliffhanger, I'm mad it wasn't longer.
I also want too say James reminds me of Jack reacher with his frame and build. (6'4, 250 pounds)
I also see a romance coming soon with the main female character ( a romance im completely fine with) I can't wait too see if the romance is going too blossom into something more or if James is going too stay alone, either way I'm on board.
I also want too talk about the hat, I feel like the cowboy hat is something that needs to be brought up in more Midwestern games and books, For the Mc to be a good cowboy he has too have a messed up cowboy hat with holes in it. Our boy James has an hat exactly like that.
Conclusion,
There needs too be some Black badge merchandise and this book is worth a credit and every penny you'd spend on it.
Rhett bruno and Jaime castle did so good and if this doesn't get best horror novel in the dragon awards I'm gonna be mad.
I can't wait for book 2 but in the meanwhile I'm gonna daydream of becoming a black badge.

Finally it's here!!!
Been waiting to hear from James Morgan Arthur Crowley again 🤣 Rodger Clark once again shines as James Crowley or for Red Dead 2 fans Arthur Morgan( in voice). This is an excellent follow/ lead up from dead acre to a 3rd black badge book. This is a great series so far and as I said in my review for Dead Acre James Crowley is like a mix of Roland Deschain from Stephen King's Dark Tower and Geralt of Rivia the Witcher Andrzej Sapkowski and now after reading the Yamada Monogatari series by Richard Parks I'll add Lord Yamada to that list. This is a series if done right Amazon video got a gem waiting
