Summary

Joseph Lake doesn’t know who he is or where he came from, but he’s beginning to think that the answer might be the death of him.

By day, Joseph scrubs toilets and fixes broken light fittings, by night he looks into weird stuff: Local hauntings, unexplained disappearances, satanic cabals dancing naked around ancient stone circles.

The usual.

The uncanny calls to him like a beacon, and he follows its signal wherever it leads, hoping that one day it will shine a light on who he really is.

Can Joseph put the pieces together and figure out his identity? And if he does, will he be able to live with who he really is?

Mystery, scares, and fast-paced action collide in this thrilling urban fantasy. Dark Lakes: A Three-Book Collection, combines the first three books in the Dark Lakes series:

  • Magic Eater
  • Blood Stones
  • Past Sins

Entertaining Urban Fantasy

It's not often that books are laugh out loud funny but this trilogy achieves the snorts, sniggers and guffaws in droves. By following the antics of the likeable protagonist and his foul mouthed sidekick we are treated to to three thoroughly enjoyable tales of magical mayhem all set against the background of England's Lake District. The humour is very much British so may not appeal to everyone but I personally couldn't get enough of it. Hopefully there will be another trilogy featuring Joseph Lake in the near future.

The narration by Dave Jones was superb. His character voices and delivery was spot on bringing genuine warmth, humour and pathos as needed. The sound quality is crystal clear and the editing is flawless.

All in all, if you need a laugh, you cannot go wrong listening to this trilogy

DAVE JONES!

would not have been at all as good without the narrator.
outstanding performance that massively elevated the story.
the story was fairly good, I am not criticising it. The problem was it was written to be read in a very specific accent and on paper could have been quite 'cheesy' in places. However, with the way Dave Jones read it, it completely came to life and made sense.

I loved the narration of Dave Jones.

This is a great listen. Joseph Lake. Joe’s woken up near a lake 10 years ago with no memory of who he is and he’s still trying to find clues and piece things together. We have hauntings, unexplained disappearances, satanic dancing naked around stone circles. A handyman who does not know he is a warlock.

Great story, stunning narrator.

Great story (little gory in places but I just shut me ears for those bits). I chuckled out loud at regular intervals and came close to tears at other times. But really Dave Jones made this story come alive. I could visualise all of it, almost feel it happening to me. His accent is soft and warm like hot chocolate but he made the ‘idiot’ endearing, Eva lovable and each monster sent the hairs standing up on the back of my neck! Wish I could find more books that he has narrated.

A wonderful find

Some of the best stories have been found completely by accident. I couldn't put these down, listening at every opportunity I was so drawn into the stories. You've got to love Joe Lake hilariously ridiculous with great hair and Eva, very flawed yet still so likeable and hilarious.

Thanks for these books.

Just me then..

I like this type of story and have given it three stars for that reason, though I haven’t made it very far into the book.
People apparently love the narration but for me, it makes this unbearable. Like I’m listening to somebody performing specifically for children. Spoilt perhaps, as I have recently listened to a Caimh McDonnell’s Stranger Times series, read by Morgan C Jones. I will try and read this book on kindle.

Exceptional Narrator

This is a good book made outstanding by the narrator. I have a lot of audio books and I think this was the best story telling I have ever heard. A total delight.

Great narrator

Great characters, and some of the best laugh-out-loud sweary put downs, I'll have to listen to it again to steal some they were that good. The narrator was one of the best, his range of voices were made for the characters and made listening easy. I'm a fan of this genre and the story line didn't disappoint.

The terrible story line

This takes place in the north of England around Bolton judging by the accent. The narrator is boring the story is boring this is just all around boring. Do your self a favour and don’t get ths.
