Summary

A masterful, heart-palpitating novel of small-town horror and psychological dread from a Bram Stoker nominee.

Aaron Decker's life changes one December morning when his wife, Allison, is killed. Haunted by her absence - and her ghost - Aaron goes through her belongings, where he finds a receipt for a motel room in another part of the country. Piloted by grief and an increasing sense of curiosity, Aaron embarks on a journey to discover what Allison had been doing in the weeks prior to her death.

Yet Aaron is unprepared to discover the dark secrets Allison kept, the death and horror that make up the tapestry of her hidden life. And with each dark secret revealed, Aaron becomes more and more consumed by his obsession to learn the terrifying truth about the woman who had been his wife, even if it puts his own life at risk.

Five stars all the way

A brilliant book from start to finish, and Joe Hempel does such an awesome job with the narration, too, as I knew he would. The guy's got a great track record.
As for Ronald Malfi, he hits all the stops here. Man, I can't wait to read more of his work. I've only read Mr.Cables so far, which was only a few months ago, but looking at all the books he's put out, it looks like I've got a fair bit of catching up to do.
Damn it. Too many books.
What makes it even worse is I could see myself reading this one again. I have the Kindle version and the audiobook at the moment, but I would buy a limited edition in a heartbeat if it ever got released.
This one was so well written. I found myself appreciating so many lines in this. Too many to mention.
Seek it out. It's completely engaging all the way
And don't forget to read the afterword.
That's all I'm saying.
The less you know the better.
Five stars. No question.

Brilliant from top to bottom

Brilliant story, exquisite prose, and superb performance. This is a creepy serial killer story with wisps of the supernatural and the uncanny that add to the mystery and creepiness. This is a crime thriller working outside of the humdrum formula of most. A must read.

The Listener goes with Malfi on a intricate skill full narrative journey.

An excellent book for anyone who wants to be pulled into a journey of discovery, with hints of the uncanny. The ending is faultless. The narrator sounds as if he was made to tell this story, and makes an enthralling interpretation of the author’s work, laying ghosts to rest.

I was gripped from start to finish and the haunting last chapter will stay with me for a very long time. Highly recommended.

A fantastic surprise.

Come With Me popped up as a recommended book based on other purchases. I'd never read anything by Ronald Malfi before, although I'd heard of him via the HWA. So I grabbed this on a whim, and listened to it over the Christmas period and it ended up being a contender for my favorite book I read this year, which had some extremely stiff competition.

Wonderful writing, extremely satisfying conclusion, a mystery that feels like a real journey to solve, and deftly performed by Joe Hempel.

Extremely glad I picked this up on the spur of the moment, and I've since bought three more books by the author to check out.

I'm coming...

Literally inhaled this audiobook... not had much sleep over the past 2 days.
It satifsied both my serial killer, and my ghostly goings on hunger, without being overly dependent on either for kicks.
I thought the narrator pitched it perfectly, the tone was fatalistic, which perfectly made sense of the circular plot. Our hero is caught up in someone else's story, in the same way we are caught up in his.
The whole piece felt comfortable and assured and I am excited to read more by Ronald Malfi.

Interesting book

I quite enjoyed this one. Certainly a cut above the usual waste of a credit. I liked the subtle supernatural overtones. Most of the characters were quite interesting and there were enough twists and turns so that the ending wasn't entirely predicable. Competent narrator too. On the whole not a bad tale. For me, it won't bear a second listen but it did help pass a fairly entertaining 11 hours while I worked.

Hard work

Not sure how good the book is because the narrator is just far too boring.

Story seems good on paper but returning this

Very good

Tried this freebie as it was in the Plus Catalogue and enjoyed it a lot. Story improved as it went on and found it quite gripping in the end. Couldn’t fault the narration at all and will be having a look at some of the authors other works.
