Michael Heppell has spent his life studying successful people, attempting to distil what it is that the very best do that others don't. How many self-help books are written by authors whose biggest success is selling self-help books? Three Simple Steps is different. Despite stock market crashes, dot-com busts, and the specter of recession, the author started a virtual company from home, using a few thousand dollars of his savings. A few years later, without ever hiring an employee or leaving his home office, he sold it for more than $100 million. As the economy slipped into another free fall, he did this again with a company in a different field. He accomplished this through no particular genius.

Have you ever been told to smile more, been teased about your accent or had your name pronounced incorrectly? If so, you’ve probably already faced bias in your everyday life. We like to believe that we are all fair-minded and egalitarian, but we all carry biases that we might not even be aware of. We might believe that we live in a post-racial society, but racial tension and inequality is pernicious and pervasive. We might believe that gender inequality is a thing of the past, but it is still ubiquitous.

As former tutor and adviser to Emperor Nero, philosopher and statesman Seneca was acutely aware of how short life can be - his own life was cut short when the emperor ordered him to commit suicide (for alleged involvement in a conspiracy). And Seneca proved true to his words - his lifelong avowal to Stoicism enabled him to conduct himself with dignity to the end. During his rich and busy life, Seneca wrote a series of essays that have advised and enriched the lives of generations down to the present day.

Nietzsche never recovered from his mental breakdown in 1889 and therefore was unable to further any plans he had for the ‘magnum opus’ he had once intended, bringing together in a coherent whole his mature philosophy. It was left to his close friend Heinrich Köselitz and his sister Elizabeth Förster-Nietzsche to go through the remaining notebooks and unpublished writings, choosing sections of particular interest to produce The Will to Power, giving it the subtitle An Attempted Transvaluation of All Values.

Our attention has never been as overwhelmed or in demand as it is today; we've never been so busy while accomplishing so little, and we've grown uncomfortable with boredom and a lack of stimulation and distraction. In Hyperfocus, Chris Bailey - described by TED.com as 'the most productive man you could ever hope to meet' - provides profound insights into how we can best manage our attention. He reveals how the brain switches between two mental modes - hyperfocus, our deep concentration mode, and scatterfocus, our creative, reflective mode - and how the surest path to being our most creative and efficient selves at work is to combine them both.

Every marketer tells a story. And if they do it right, we believe them. We believe that wine tastes better in a $20 glass than a $1 glass. We believe that an $80,000 Porsche Cayenne is vastly superior to a $36,000 VW Touareg, which is virtually the same car. We believe that $225 Pumas will make our feet feel better, and look cooler, than $20 no-names... and believing it makes it true.

Summary
The modern world bombards us with messages that we are not enough and need something outside ourselves to be fulfilled.
The truth is everything we need is already inside us. We just need to uncover it. Based on the ground-breaking mindset training and culture building platform co-founded by Dr. Michael Gervais and NFL coach Pete Carroll, Compete to Create provides a blueprint to unlock your authentic self, explore the edges of your potential, and live a life of purpose and meaning.
In this Audible Original you’ll get an in-depth look at how world-class athletes, artists, and entrepreneurs organize their inner lives to thrive in any environment. Dr. Gervais, who has spent the last two decades as a high performance psychologist, translates his experience in the trenches into actionable skills that you can apply to your everyday life. In each chapter, Coach Carroll shares lessons from his career, insights into building relationship-based teams, and how he helps people find their best.
If you know there is more inside you to discover - more to contribute, more room to grow - Compete to Create gives you the tools you need to embark on a life-changing adventure.

the only “Original” part is in the Audible exclusive
I would probably recommend it to someone that is new to personal development, because it is well written and read, but there’s little/no new ideas/content that you can’t find somewhere else.
A decent collection of best practices that could be a good starting point if this is your first book on personal growth, otherwise you might find all already heard somewhere else.

Everything about this book exudes authenticity, from the thoughtful creation of the work they’ve done with high performance athletes to coach and Michael actually doing the reading for the book instead of hiring it out. Insanely powerful with tactical action steps. If there is any fluff in this book I was so enthralled with consuming the foods I missed it totally. Learning from the best
The culture and environment that Pete Carroll created at USC and the Seattle Seahawks has proven successful in creating winning teams that care for each other and maximize their potential. This Audible Original covers the philosophies of Coach Carroll and superstar sports psychologist Dr. Michael Gervais as they explain, step by step, the process of competing to be your best self and bringing out the best in those around you. Besides their practical application with winning sports teams and individuals, Coach Carroll and Dr. Gervais have used this same approach in the Performance Science Institute program they created at the Marshall Business School at USC, which teaches students from all majors throughout the campus. Therefore, you will find this book will speak to you even if you have never played a sport or aspired to be a world class athlete.
