Story
DCO’s latest patch has finally made it possible for dungeons to interact with one another. This can mean only one thing: It is time for some player vs player action. More importantly, it means James and Blank will finally be able to settle their score on the Fields of Battle. Only, there’s a lot more riding on this than pride - if James loses, he will be forced to leave DCO for good.

Summary
James thought he would be just another adventurer in the world’s most anticipated dungeon delving VRMMORPG. But when he logs in, he soon finds out that he won’t be diving the dungeon - he will be creating it. Pretty awesome right?
At least that was what he thought when he boldly chose "Random" as his dungeon type....
Then he summoned his first mob. A fearsome, bloodthirsty demonic.... Chicken.
Still, Demonic Farm Animals are the least of his worries. The person who is supposed to be teaching him the ropes is a weirdly advanced AI pixie, who drinks too much and is overly fond of gambling. Oh, and some mysterious figure seems to be watching and judging his every move - so signing that NDA is feeling like less and less of a solid choice.
Either way, James is up for the challenge. Even if it means building a dungeon around kamikaze sheep, enraged cows, unhygienic pigs, and yes...Dickens.
At least his next randomly selected mob type can’t be worse...right?
This is the revised, edited, and novelized retelling of the popular Royal Road web serial Dungeon Core Online by Glyax.

Inventive and interesting start to this series
Some of the choices made by the author could have easily fallen flat if they had been executed poorly, the characters starting out as fairly traditional archetypes or the somewhat odd nature of the first dungeon floor for example, but luckily this was not the case with the author taking these elements and delivering an entertaining first instalment in this series.
The narrator delivers a typically strong performance, helping to bring the characters to life even more.
Overall, an entertaining listen and a good start to this series.

I'm a bit surprised...
This is actually a pretty good book.
I love the Dungeon type he ended up with - It certainly puts a different spin on things!
The story keeps moving and the characters have enough of a personality to keep it interesting and the narrator keeps a good pace going.
I don't want to put spoilers into this so I'm going to stop there.

A fun, if slightly vanilla, story.
Disclaimer: I was provided a copy of this book free of charge in exchange for an honest review.
I admit that I was drawn to this book purely due to the cover, after all, it's a flipping giant, fire breathing Rooster!
What I found was a story full of recognisable references from bygone years of gaming through to more recent OPs. I see a lot of reviews referring to this in a negative light but I for one enjoyed spotting these and it made me like the protagonist more for it.
Story-eise, while I applaud the story for avoiding the cliché 'trapped in a game- shenanigans, I did find James' reasons for becoming involved in DCO rather weak and this side of the story needed a lot more fleshing out to explain his motivations. Considering the perceived threats and dangers he fa es, I felt his justification for continuing with the game very weak.
In game I did enjoy the play between Rue and Glyax but the sexual tension really did feel unnecessary and shoe-horned in to tick some mental checkbox for Gamelit stories. Besides that, the I terplay was great and given real chops thanks to the narration by Travis Beldree which was faultless throughout the story.
Meanwhile the mobs were interesting and fun and the names given to their abilities (both for the mobs and players) really made me chuckle at times and made me want to install a Worms game to start unleashing exploding sheep on one another.
The story ended at a suitable strong cliff-hanger but I generally like some sense of fulfillment or success for the MC prior to the end but this didn't happen and it made the end rather jarring.
Overall I did enjoy it. There is a lot to like here with the camaraderie between characters and the novel and amusing mobs and abilities all brilliant presented by the narrator but the real-world side is very lacking and does let an otherwise excellent story down somewhat.

Funny... yet annoying.
No matter what is said below, Travis Baldree is best narrator.
Spoilers below, read with caution.
This was a pretty okay listen... It was very slow to start, but I liked the mechanics of dungeon building, The wittiness is at a level of 9 of 10, as there are so many references to pop culture of the past and present and most are enjoyably humerous. The dickens, demonic chickens, are great and the steampunk dinos are cool. What I didn't enjoy at all was the relationship/dialogue between James and the "AI" pixie, Rue. Everything is flat when it comes to the pair and their relationship never really evolves past him beeing annoyed at her drunken/overly sarcastic addiction to gambling, even though it 'repeatedly' says other wise.
I was conpletely fine with the way the story was progressing. It was fun and enjoyable for James to both want the Knights who say Ni to succeed against his hilliarious mobs but at the same time die to them so he could uinlock new dungeon advancements.
What this book didn't need was the game's creator having it in for the MC and do his best to sabotage him in the last chapter of the book while using a complete rip off of Blank from No Game No Life. No Game No Life was first realeased in 2012 about a sibling pair of shut in elite gamers known only as Blank, so to have James' main foe be the game's creator and his adopted sibling pair of elite gamers known only as Blank is a complete cop out. It's both unprofessional and unnecessary, and completely turned me off of this book.

Pixie = Cringe
I am rather torn by this book. I like the overall story but some of the details are just too annoying and I ended up listening to most of the book at 1.75x speed to get past them. The pixie is an alcoholic predator/pedophile. The MC is a minor still in high school and the pixie's constant sexual advances/teasing make it seem like she is just trying to groom him to be her obedient plaything. I get that a common fantasy trope is about the young inexperienced guy gets the older sexy woman. But when that woman is a creepy AI designed by an older man that she calls dad to be paired with the MC by his parents, it just feels off. Somehow the character flaws of alcoholism and gambling addiction are meant to be played off as cute as she dominates her "partner" throughout the story.

Disappointing and Boring
Sure, the concept of the Demon Farm and overall Storyline is interesting but I found everything else rather boring. The Game mechanic limitations were needlessly stifling. As a D&D Dungeon Master who has created my own Dungeons I was depressed with how uncreative the building of the first floor of the Dungeon was. The MC did not even have to create any of the Dungeon Mobs. They were all preset creatures doing all of our Dungeon Core's work for him. Being able to self create original monsters and sending them to challenge Dungeon Divers is one of the best things about being the Master of a Dungeon.
My biggest issue is with our MC. There was no originality to him. For a professional Gamer he is dumb as a stump and entirely reliant on his helper fairy.
Travis Baldree did his usual great performance in his narration. No complaints there.
However I cannot fathom how this mediocre book received so many 5 star reviews.
I tried to push on through this Audiobook, I really did. But I was unable to continue after 4 hours of Disappointment and Boredom.

Splitting the Report card Necessary
This one is sort of a mixed bag it's an amazing book but it's something where if you're just trying to listen to a book Is someone who enjoys the genre then then this could be a bit awkward Because of some of the older pop culture references but if you're a gamer hardcore and over the age of 30 then and this has a lot of stuff that you're going to enjoy It's being really crunchy it also has some terminology that only gamers and computer programmers would have known beforehand luckily they do a great job of explaining that terminology so so I'd say that this is is this a 9 out of 10 if you're a hard gamer but if you're just someone who likes the genre and wants to listen to the book it's a 7 out of 10 I've given a great review just be aware that there are actually 2 separates report cards for this and it's just depending on whether or is whether or not Your Core Or casual

The book has an interesting concept, but the story itself was a miss for me (for one thing, the pop culture references were sometimes too frequent). I was not a fan of a few things in this and they really made me not want to read the next one, whenever it comes out.
First, I don't care for real-life people becoming romantically involved with artificial intelligence (it hasn't exactly happened yet but it seems to be going this way). It just feeds into a fantasy that isn't healthy or sustainable. Not to mention that the main character is basically a simp for her, but that's beside the point.
Second, and this is the bigger one, NOTHING HAPPENS FOR A LONG TIME. A good majority of the first half of the book is just the MC setting up his dungeon and watching people fight it. The MC himself doesn't have much "skin in the game". He isn't the one in a deadly scenario and he isn't the one facing challenges. He's just setting up blocks to see if people can knock them down or not and I just don't find that entertaining. Later in the story, there is something of a plot outside of the dungeon creation and everything, but it just isn't grabbing me.
I don't know if I'm missing the point or just not easily entertained, but this book wasn't as enjoyable as I thought it would be. The only plus side is that the narration was pretty good.

Annoying pixies
I gave this book a try because it seamed interesting. But the author repeated his recipe from his last series. An annoying pixie and a mc that bends over backwards for them. I don't know what this is supposed to add to the story. I gave up on the second book of his last series when this recipe didn't work itself out and I'm not sure I want to try finishing this one

Farming the dungeon
James is like just about everyone else and thrilled for the upcoming release of the latest VRMMO game, Dungeon Core Online. The servers are limited to the populous of your city, so you will be able to play locally. The players are able to take on an ever expanding and growing dungeon unique to their server. James is amazed to find out why that is as he is selected to be the dungeon core!
This is one of the funniest books that I have read in a while! There are so many gags, references, quotes, call outs, and puns. I am really looking forward to book 2! As always, Travis Baldree makes this a joy. If he is the narrator, I will give the book a try.
Content warning. Mold language and a suggestive pixie.

So funny, so many puns/gamer jokes!
One of the hallmarks of LitRPG is gamer jokes and puns. This book probably had the highest jokes to words ratio I have ever read. It was a great fun and funny adventure, and I would put it at the very top of the Dungeon Core genre and near the top of LitRPG as a whole.
