A burst of enthusiasm and great new ideas.

Gail A McHugh really knows how to write a great book that totally engages you right from the first page. If you have a teenager with ADHD, chances are that you, as a parent, might also, so the no-waffle, no overloading of medical jargon is a welcome change. Instead, she writes positively and with empathy towards the struggles of dealing with a teenager, with or without Executive Function issues. She clearly understands the frustrations of parents and outlines the possibilities of help and support. She totally realises that each child/teenager has individual needs, and she is flexible in her advice offering more than one option (I particularly like the use of the word 'could' instead of 'should'). The book really gave me food for thought - especially on Consequences and Behaviour, Working Memory Training and use of Mnemonic Devices. It brings to the fore, the things that we take for granted without realising our teen needs our support and also helps to highlight our teenagers' strengths and weaknesses and work on what needs attention. Above all, you feel like you are receiving the advice of a trusted friend.

Excellent resource for teens

Teenage is a challenge not only for the teens but their parents and educators too, as the teens are undergoing multiple physical, psychological and socioemotional changes while meeting the demands of this highly competitive and demanding world. I have observed myself and my siblings going through challenges and struggles during our teen years as our parents and mentors were not aware of the support we needed. This is when a valuable resource like this book can come in handy, which helps the teens develop executive functioning skills that they need to improve their focus and confidence and be the success they want to be. Definitely recommend it for teens or their parents.

Great listen, lots of tools & information

My son was diagnosed with EFD around 6 years ago now. He is 15 now. I would of loved to of read this book just before he started into his teens.
But, there's still lots of information and tools to help, I will definitely be trying some of these when it comes to preparing for his GCSEs.
I think this is a great book and not just for kids with EFD.

Easy to implement life skills for teens

Most parents have no idea how to raise children. No idea. Most of what they know comes from media or their own poor upbringing. Not to mention, the world is evolving very rapidly, so children specially our teens, are faced with much more distractions than ever before.

That’s why you need to listen to this book, to help your child develop the focus, self-confidence, and organizational and life skills they need to handle the real world. You can’t rely on the school system or for them to pick them up on there on, and this book will show you how.

Helpful and Insighful

This book is extremely helpful for teenagers in acquiring executive functioning skills. Before listening, I took executive functional skills for granted and believed we all eventually developed them. I was so wrong! Gail does an excellent job of educating you on what executive functional skills are, how to identify teens struggling to learn them, and the methods on how to help them develop as their parents or teacher.

I was very impressed with the sections that teach teens the skills to organize, stay focused, self-monitor, and develop working memory. As many of us know, these skills are commonly underdeveloped in teenagers, and I found great value in the instruction on improving them. I also loved the suggestions for playing games with your teenage children, which would surely be productive and fun.

It is very apparent that Gail has a wealth of experience and expertise as a child psychologist, as the professionalism and quality of this book demonstrate.
