Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The audiobook of Guards! Guards! is narrated by impressionist and actor Jon Culshaw, best known for BBC Radio 4’s Dead Ringers, and for the Doctor Who audiobooks and dramas. BAFTA and Golden Globe award-winning actor Bill Nighy (Love Actually; Pirates of the Caribbean; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) reads the footnotes, and Peter Serafinowicz (Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace; Shaun of the Dead) stars as the voice of Death. Featuring a new theme tune composed by James Hannigan.

'NOBLE DRAGONS DON'T HAVE FRIENDS. THE NEAREST THEY CAN GET TO THE IDEA IS AN ENEMY WHO IS STILL ALIVE.'

The city of Ankh-Morpork is in turmoil, its citizens revolting. Again.

A shadowy secret brotherhood has summoned a dragon to spread terror throughout the city, intent on overthrowing the Patrician and ruling in his place. Too bad the dragon has ideas of its own...

It's up to Captain Sam Vimes and the ramshackle Night Watch to stop it. Only problem is, the Watch are more used to dealing with mobs than dragons.

And if they can't bring down this fire-breathing tyrant and reinstate their own, slightly less dangerous one, Ankh-Morpork might be lost. For ever...

With an afterword by Ben Aaronovitch.

Guards! Guards! is the first book in the City Watch series, but you can listen to the Discworld novels in any order.

The first book in the Discworld series - The Colour of Magic - was published in 1983. Some elements of the Discworld universe may reflect this.

Jury still out re Jon Culshaw

I’ve been a big fan of TP's City Night Watch (and the Witches) series for years.
I loved Nigel Planer's renditions - they were so enjoyable to listen to. He brought out the fun, humour and, dare I say it, the farce of the stories naturally, effortlessly and with aplomb.
In contrast, I found Jon Culshaw's narration to be slightly OTT which made his rendition sound stilted and disjointed. It was too serious and dramatic which, in my opinion, is not what the series is about. He made Nobby out to be more intelligent and quite sarcastic. Have I misjudged him all this time? Also, the plebs all sounded the same ie middle class.
I really regret giving away my physical copies of the books when I bought the audio recordings. However, the sound quality of the tapes have deteriorated due to constant replays. Audible has copies of these recordings, but it comes with a warning re the sound quality as well. There are no cd versions of Nigel's narration - I looked.
I will persevere with JC and hope that he will grow on me 🤞.

I love this book

It’s got everything, dragons, police officers, very amusing parodies of our world. 100% recommended and if you don’t like it, don’t worry, you can still be a footnote.

Great version of a wonderful story

Very excited to have John Culshaw carefully handling such a precious book. Well read, lovely voices and an excellent listen. My one criticism is that is some of the places where the action needs to zip along, the pacing was a little slow. However all is forgiven for a divine Nobby (a sentence which has never been used before)
Thank you and off I go to the next book

One of my favourites!

This is very well done, it definitely makes me think of Sean Bean for Vimes. It’s always a worry when your favourites are redone but I am loving all the new versions, they add another level of enjoyment to the Discworld, my most treasured collection.

Exciting start to the guards series

I've read the whole series many times over the years, the guards just about nudges the witches as my favourite. Jon Culshaw did a great job with the characters we love, especially Vimes. I can't wait for the rest of the series, straight into book two now...

loved the story and the performance

Having read all of the discworld novels at least a couple of times, this wasn't among the favourites. this performance brought it to life in unexpected ways.

Jon Culshaw pulling out all the big names!

I think for most Pratchett fans, ‘Charles Dance’ is a perfect Lord Vetinari, but ‘Sean Bean’ as Vimes is inspired. Jon Culshaw is a fantastic voice talent and ‘does the voices’ to a tee. Feels more like a full cast production than single voice over. I also love the continuity of Bill Nighy reading the footnotes, he gets the tone every time. A joy for Pratchett fans old and new.

Disappointed narrative

It is unfortunate that this reading of Guards! Guards! Is no match to the Nigel Planer absolute masterpiece. The narration of Jon Culshaw is too serious, at times oblivious to the humorous content it delivers creating a jarring dissonance that I still have not recovered from.

A Northern Vimes

Pratchett at his best, but with the subtle and nuanced voices that Jon Culshaw does for the City Watch novels, it is superb. I appreciated the numerous Northern accents that Culshaw does, ones that I both recognise and suit the characters well.

Jon is brilliant

One of my favourite stories and Jon Culshaw adds a new depth to characters. Could not be happier!
