Summary

Rock Star!

Things were starting to look up for Magelord Minalan the Spellmonger: The magic mountain in his domain not only made him a wealthy man and the most powerful mage in history, it also produced a lode of magical gemstones with unique properties - properties the Alka Alon, the masters of magic on Callidore, are fascinated by. When Minalan gets his chance to trade some of his magic rocks for irionite, he finds himself in a position to raise hundreds more magi with the stones...making them High Magi.

But as valuable as that bargain is for prosecuting the war with the Dead God and his sinister armies, such power comes with a hefty price. Every new High Mage Minalan raises presents potential new problems. The Magelords have inspired fear in their neighbors. The warmagi invent deadly new spells. The lower orders of magi are getting restless. The mage-led Sevendor Town wants a new charter. King Rard and the royal court are pressuring the nascent Arcane Orders politically. Some magi are crossing the Penumbra and taking stones from the goblins as well as taking their service. And some are just starting to get a little crazy.

It makes a nice, normal little raid on his lands seem refreshing in its simplicity.

In trying to balance the needs of the war with the needs of a well-ordered Order, Minalan finds himself making compromises, cutting deals, and bargaining what power he has in a high-stakes game where Chaos seems to be the only player who knows the rules. The temptations of his position and the power he wields are great, but so, he discovers, are the responsibilities. But when his patience seems nearly exhausted and his alliances seem ready to crumble, a massive army emerges from the shadowy realms and strikes south, forcing the High Magi to rally around the Spellmonger in defense of the kingdom.

As the genocidal goblin army marches toward the once-prosperous cottonlands of Gilmora, Minalan and his High Magi must defend a single bridge against them at all costs. And they are ready to. But the plans of magi count little when the powerful and subtle mind of the Dead God opposes them. For when the die is cast and the first blow is struck, it becomes clear that nothing is as Minalan had foreseen. As disaster looms for the humani kingdom and even the Alka Alon are threatened, only a desperate appeal to divinity, a dangerously risky adventure and a little classy enchantment offer any hope against calamity. For the day has come when all that stands between ruin and survival is the bravery and cunning of the Spellmonger and his High Magi!

Another great book!

Loved this one just like the others. My only issues is the clear timeline issues in the books. Minalans age seems to change randomly every other chapter, but aside from that I loved this addition. TM said this is the end of the first arc of Minalan, and I definitely felt that.

Another great book by Mancour.

Another thoroughly enjoyable installment in the ongoing saga of the spellmonger.
My only complaint, is that I just want to start on the next one.

My fav fantasy series of all time (so far!)

I have read series by Terry Goodkind, Sarah J. Maas, Leigh Bardugo, Brian Staveley, Taran Matharu, James Islington and Brandon Sanderson and I think this series is my current favourite. Great mix of magic and reasonable level of sex, violence and gritty language to add that edge of realism. I was originally not taken with the narrator (seemed bit monotone), but he's definately improved from book 2 onwards - much more passion and sense of different characters through change to his voice.Brandon Sanderson. I'm hoping this series will go similar way to Pug in The Magician and The Spellmonger to be a force to take on the gods.

Focuses on administrative tasks and organization

Are you sick of adventure, battles, and tricks? How would you like to have irianite and snow stone explained to you another couple dozen times?

While this series as always been repetitive in explaining things, you’d think by book 5 they wouldn’t need to keep telling you what witch stones do.

Also, the author seems to vehemently avoid action. Just going on and on about who lives where, how much coin a tax should be, or how to organize his subjects. When opportunities for some thing interesting comes up like say the contest for a witch stone at the magical festival...he just skips passed the event and tells you who won...guess what it’s someone you’ve never heard of and don’t care about.

Oh there is a border dispute? Just skip to it being dealt with so you can get back to talking about organization! Bleh

Can't believe I almost gave up on book one...

I bought book one several months ago, based on some threads I read on Reddit. I started listening to it and an hour in I was not fully engaged. Of course, I was multitasking at the time, but I just didn't get into it. I gave it a break and took a second run through Kingkiller Chronicle, listened to a couple mediocre novels, and then gave it another shot...

I ordered book two before book one was finished. I love the character development and Min is such a smart ass you can't help but love him.

I highly recommend this series to anyone and everyone.

Awesome

if you're anything like me eventually, after reading / listening to books for some time you are able to guess at a books plot with a decent amount of accuracy but this series catches me off guard regularly. to have just gotten through the fifth book and still be on the edge of my seat with fun new surprises and plot twist is in my opinion amazing. The journey thus far has been fun, I find myself very much looking forward continuing

Reminds me of Patrick Rothfuss

You won’t find deep intrigue or plot twists in this series. What makes is so enjoyable is the development of the characters; both as written by the author and performed by John Lee. I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to this series and hope that the remaining books come out on Audio book format soon!

Amazing and fantastical

I love the spellmonger series and my only problem is having to wait for them to be released on audible. I know I could actually READ the books but John Lee’s narration is just too damn perfect and it wouldn’t be the same.
