Summary

Invasions and sabotage. Two civilizations doing anything to exist. War crimes are the norm.

Joe takes his first step into exile, and is promptly unable to breathe. This new Zone has a higher concentration of power, magnitudes denser. His first task is to survive, but mere survival is the least of his concerns.

The Zone he has landed on has been in a state of constant war for thousands of years, a tug of war between the Elven and Dwarven societies. Not choosing a side is the same as declaring both to be your personal enemy. Though he is resistant, Joe reluctantly decides to go with the group he thinks will help him grow the most - and is instantly plunged into their bitter war. To gain the freedom he desires, Joe needs to turn to the less savory aspects of his class.

Engulfed by darkness, Joe can only hope he’ll be able to snuff out the light.

I waited a few years for this

This book took so long to get out that I started into the other series he has written. This is my 19th book from Dakota and they are awesome. It was great to finally return to the series I started with. Luke was made for this world of Dwarves- excellent voice acting! He is best narrator dude

Should be categorised as a children's book

Much better than the last two books.

This series should be considered a mix of childrens and YA now and should be categorised as such. If it was I feel it would receive far fewer critical reviews.

Joe as a character is somehow getting dumber and his memory and discipline worse as his the stats that are supposed to stop that increase. A good example of that is his lack of characteristic stat training or daily query training. Especially given the initial character setup of Joe completing every character assessment test early in the first book to establish he is the sort of character that would act like that.

I can understand that this is an attempt to stop power creep but given the writer designed the world this way they should embrace it and go with it. if you think about in-game time there should be a % of lvl 1 max stat with an achievement for it esq characters already in game.

The book still has pacing issues narratively and I can again only assume it's down to a yesman style editor not being strict enough with Dakota and or Dakota unable to kill their darlings (in this case written scenes not characters).

Excellent again!

I really enjoy these books, they are well thought out with a good progression along the storyline, and although part of a series you are not left feeling like you are getting an ending to this part of the adventure.

The narration is also excellent with energy and what feels like a genuine enjoyment of the books themselves.

terrible narration

for some reason the narrator decided to soak really slowly for dwarves, resulting in them sounding like backward, slow children. worse it makes it very difficult to listen to.

Shame as the story is great

another excellent entry into this world.

in terms of the books in this series its not as hectic or as manic as some of the others but it has a nice place summer reminiscing of the first book in the series, I am really looking forward to what comes next in the story

Luke Daniels is as fantastic as ever!

Great chapter of the story as well, but Daniel voice acting takes this to the next level!

Not as good as previous books but still fun.

Joe's back but he gets nerfed a bit at the start. He then flits about from thing to thing in his usual haphazard way. I found his lack of thought slightly more annoying in this book than previously.

There isn't much of a narrative and there's a lot more skill advancement than plot advancement, however, Krout's humour really shines through and makes this mostly a pleasure to read. The narration was excellent despite one or two words being mispronounced.
