Summary

It turns out, the "Demon Weed" actually is a gateway drug! Who knew? Tom Perkinje certainly didn't. He had never smoked anything in his life, but as the new kid in town trying to make friends, he foolishly let his new buddy Reggie talk him into trying a joint that he'd picked up from a new dealer.

Before he knew it, Tom was having a seriously bad trip; a total out-of-body experience where the world had dissolved around him. The next thing Tom knew, there were these deranged myopic wizards from some place called Astlan calling on him in some sort of pig Latin mumbo jumbo. They had somehow mistaken Tom for a demon!

He tried to flee, but the wizards were relentless and were determined to conjure him into their world and bind him as their demon slave for all of eternity. And these crazy wizards? Turns out, they were going to war and planned to use their new demon slave as a secret weapon to obliterate the enemy!

everyone is an idiot

If it weren't for the fact that I was enjoying myself with how fun the story is, I would have gotten pissed off with how everyone is an self important, paranoid fool that thinks about themselves too much and believe in stereotypes.

Great premise

This starts fairly slowly, and as others have mentioned: The narrator does sound at a loss, perpetually in shock of the current moment. The story does more than make up for it and it's certainly not unlistenable. I'll be taking the dive into the rest of the audiobooks going forward. Having adjusted to the voice actor somewhat, it's good.

Alright book, awful narrator

alright. awful may be a bit harsh, however this narrator sounds perpetually surprised, and it distracts from the book. The strong American accent makes me cringe too.

Just as fun as it sounds in the blurb!

This was an enjoyable coming of age fantasy that lived up to the promise of its super fun sounding blurb. This was set in a fun fantasy world and was a character driven story packed with action, humour, and great characters.

Despite being more than 24 hours long I flew through this audio pretty quickly as the story was an enjoyable and engaging one.

Stephen Bel Davies did a good job with the audio. He got the tone of the story and did a good job with the character voices. It took me about an hour to warm to him but once I did I enjoyed his performance a lot

Utter trash

Full of "Deus ex machina" moments, characters whose description constantly conflicts with their actions" and incredible stupid actions from these characters.
Most of the side characters had more background than the main character and were more believable.

Decent ideas, but very slow and trope-y execution

The story idea is decent but told incredibly, frustratingly, slowly. Mainly to do with this authors writing style.

The author focusses on what characters do, but very little about their motivations. Which makes the 'main characters' seem bland, but overall, ironically, is a good thing for this story
.
Because this author describes his 'main' and 'trivial' characters in equal amount, so also all the characters you don't really know or really care about. This got to the point where I began to doubt who the 'main' characters were.

The author also has the tendency to 'wind back time' and describe a scene from a different characters perspective. Normally, not a big deal, except if it is a random 'one-off' character you don't know or care about.

The author effectively keeps 'interrupting' the main story. A one minute scene where the main character accidentally portals into a guy, is followed by an entire (15min) chapter on what kind of day that rando NPC has had before meeting the main character. Again, would be fine, except its a Joe Random-not-relevant-for-the-plot-guy! So you have to slog through this chapter to get on with the main narrative!

It also does not help that there is an entire chapter devoted to a treaty between demons, none of which are mentioned in the story up until that point.

A famous writer once said that 'writing is about pruning', I now know what she means.

Add to that a lot of 'character suddenly has the ability to do X' or 'Deus ex machina' moments, just means that a lot of what is left of the 'tense' moment, feel kind of cheap or cheated.

Also despite what is in the blurb, this is not a 'weed' or a comical story, for which I am honestly grateful.
