Story
I never believed in the whole “light at the end of the tunnel” folly where people, after having a near-death experience, would startle awake in a cold sweat exclaiming, “I saw the light!” But there I was, in this so-called “tunnel” facing a glaring light, when the last thing I remembered was sleeping in my room - the royal bed-chamber, as others called it. Had I died? If so, how? King Grey once benefited from unrivaled strength, wealth, and prestige in a world governed by martial ability but now finds himself reborn in a society dominated by magic.

Story
Legends speak of wizards with the power to rival Gods. To Hump, it’s just a story. Apprenticed to a wandering wizard, he grew up on the road, following the coin on whatever quest it took them. He always believed his master was just an ordinary hedge wizard, until the old man suddenly died, and his book of spells bound to Hump’s soul. Knowing no other life, Hump takes up his master’s staff and heads out alone into a world of dungeons and monsters. So begins the path of The Wanderer. The White Flame. The Hedge Wizard.

At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil. He’ll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that’s just on the first day. Callum had seen things all his life. There are monsters and beasts living among people, but he learned very early not to admit such things, not if he didn’t want people to think him crazy. It turns out that the supernatural is real, but at 30, Callum has no desire to be part of that secret. Not that he has a choice when it turns out he is a mage, albeit one that hasn’t cast any spells in all his life. There are requirements, duties, and education that the powers that be insist he be subject to. To hell with that.

My master created me for his entertainment, leading adventurers to ruin. Betraying them at the last moment, just when their glorious victory was on hand. I have been found again by the newest member of a quartet of dungeon crawlers. Poor fool. This time will be no different. Or does it have to be? Maybe I don't need to spend eternity left in a deep, dark dungeon waiting to devour would-be heroes. Maybe, just maybe, I can take him over and use this new identity to leave and masquerade as an adventurer myself.

Awful but strangely addictive
I honestly don't know how to review this book.
The story is painfully linear with few to no surprises, twists or turns.
The writing is sloppy and often repeats itself, with a decent editor you could probably half the length of the books without losing any of the story. No it hasn't got any better than the previous 2.
The dialogue is the worst of all. It reminds me of a badly dubbed 80's Chinese martial arts film. It just all flows awfully.
The narrator is decent and I feel like he's doing his best to make such a terribly written story work but there's only so much you can do.
All that said, this is still the 3rd book in the series and I'm still listening. Partly through a sense of wonder at how bad they are and partly because, despite its flaws, the story is quite fun. I feel like my rating is generous but it has kept me coming back so I guess there's something there!

Enjoyable but short
I really enjoyed the whole series up to now. I also find the writing has improved from the first two packs. Not as much action, but rather setting the scene for the upcoming parts. The biggest downside for me was the duration, it just felt a bit short for what is in theory a pack of two books. Looking forward to the next part

Great story, too short, superb performance.
As with the other packs, it's not even been a fortnight and I've already finished it twice. The story in itself is great but the books are too short. The true identity of the MC is unravelled by some and his secret will probably not hold for long. Taylorson is superb as always. I must say, the story would benefit if the MC would get into some real trouble but I love it when bad people get their comeuppance. Mr. Sisa, quit your other job and write more about Lark 😊

Starting to get repetitive
For the most part, it is just a repetition of the previous books. Lark is perfect ( you know how amazing he is because people keep pointing it out), and doesn’t have any character development, even though he has a chance at a second life it doesn’t feel like it, it just feels like an awkward insertion, most character interactions feel empty with little to no development between characters that really go beyond being told that they care about each other. Lark isn’t a person, he’s a caricature, just a combination of exaggerated perfections to create the “perfect” person. This is mostly just a repeat of the previous books with substituted characters.

Too short! I want more! hahahaha, it's definitely one of the top OPMC stories out there. I love the world building, smart MC, lots of characters, city building, and clever takes on items/herbs/stuff in the world.
cons: too short.
PS: is there a map for this world/continent? I would love to have that to supplement the experience.

Very "Beginning After the End" -like
Only complaints are that it takes to long to get the next audiobook and they are too short...can listen to two books in a single day if you try.
That complaint out of the way...this series is epic. The pure fact that the OPMC isn't an idiot sets this series apart from most of the books in this category.
If you haven't tried these yet it's is a must. Top notch narration with a crazy story

More of the same... fun story poorly written
In no way does the MC grow or change. No hint of a personality or desire. No indication that he has human emotions or thoughts.
The longer the story goes on the more it seems like the MC is somewhere between, willfully ignorant of how his actions and the way he talks to people make him NOT A GOOD PERSON... or a full out sociopath (which not innately a bad thing... just means he has zero capacity to understand others feelings).
Mind you... a story about a morally gray "hero" is very interesting, but we dont get that here. He is posited as the OP MC here to help and save the ppl, but actually acts in a way thats between anti-hero and soon to be heel turned villain.
I feel like this is an effort from the author to wink at the reader to insert some type of comedy by having the main character Lark Marcus under explain or just be creepy about everything as to confuse people he's talking to. However, this is a complete miss (even though it keeps happening) because he will immediately try to clean it up by giving a better explanation.
All other characters just think to themselves how AMAZING the MC is and how jealous they are of how AMAZING he is... - show dont tell
- OR -
All other characters have 90%+ of their dialogue simple disagreeing with anything the main character just said... "IMPOSSIBLE!!" is uttered by every new character we meet, and the majority of those characters only display this as personality. (unless in a couple chapters they fall into the other category)
MC is in business with terrible people (doesnt care)
He spends lives under him like they are nothing (even though the narrator cant tell us enough how much the MC "cares" about his subjects) - show dont tell.
He uses his strength to whatever end he sees fit (which in like 90% of flushed out stories means HES NOT A GOOD GUY)
***light spoiler***
- That business at the end with the elves literally makes him a tyrant taking advantage of an indigenous people with no remorse... and this is our "hero" of the story???
...much like the last two publishers packs (4 books) the author needs more reps
- too many repeated phrases or words
- little to no world building beyond the scene we are in getting us to the next "plot" point
- Show dont tell please... The narration and internal thoughts of side characters constantly assign meaning and intent behind things that the MC doesn't actually do, think, or intend...
... With all that said. If you are like me and would prefer an easy ride of a listen, no real tension or consequences. Nothing complicated or detailed to remember or imagine then I highly recommend "The Wizards Butler" by Nathan Lowell
... ... if you've spent that credit, then id recommend his space ferrying story line starting with "Quarter Share", there are like 5 or 6 of those...
...If after that, you are still looking for some easy listening then this series is good enough!
Or if like me you would rather finish a series (as long as its not bad) than start a new one... do it.

Loved it
Hope they continue the series with more audiobooks, ive listened to over 150 fantasy audiobooks over the past 2 years and this series is one of my favorites. Main character is OP but at the same time has his limitations, cant wait for more!!!
