Summary

'I no longer try to mask my autism; I now work to support my autism'

Take charge of your needs including sensory self-care and emotional regulation for a calmer and happier life.

It is a myth that autistic children grow into 'less autistic' adults. In fact, many autistic adults feel more overwhelmed as they age as the stresses of social demands such as relationships, parenting, or the work environment increase.

Niamh Garvey offers tips and tricks designed to reduce sensory and emotional stress and look after your autistic self. From understanding what's happening when the stress response kicks in to using the 'detective habit' to spot your individual strengths and triggers. What's more, every element of this book can be personalised to you.

Featuring strategies including 'quick calm plans' for managing triggers and lived-experience advice on understanding emotional regulation, coping with sensory overload and how to look after your senses during intimacy, this guide is here to ensure that you don't just survive adulthood, you thrive in it.

Good take or leave tips

My profile isn't the same as the author but examples of ways to anticipate & self sooth sensory sensitivities are quite inspired.

The author has done a lot of trial & error for readers & some examples are very relatable.
You may find something that works for you if you are autistic (or neurodivergent or highly sensitive).

There's also so many examples there will be some you don't relate to but it might trigger or inspire you to find you own way.

I found the openness & vulnerability of the author (in admitting extreme sensory sensitivity & quirkiness) very refreshing. Just because something is extreme or unusual doesn't mean it isn't common amongst autistic folk & very real & important to them.
A very different way of looking at how we can accommodate ourselves or be accommodated. The intentions of the author are very non judgemental, gental & nurturing. Often books like this trigger something in the language or medical deficits approach, this was very easy to listen to even when discussing topics which can be quite repulsive like other peoples smells.
I have recommended this book to other highly sensitive autistic people. I dropped a star for story as some parts were a little repetative.

Defiantly worth listening too!!

One of the best autistic books out there. I have recently been diagnosed as autistic as an adult and I felt like everything in the book just made sense and made me feel not alone. Defiantly worth it! I have the physical copy and an audible copy.

Useful and informative

This book was recommended to me when I got my diagnosis. It is very helpful and provides some thoughtful and interesting ideas to help with a variety of different issues someone who is autistic may experience. The recording quality is very good and it is narrated well.

The audiobook could benefit from having the chapter titles in the navigation to allow you to find the relevant chapter if you're in need of some information or support for a particular issue.

Extremely reccomend but could do with having pdfs

Amazing book though I do wish there were pdfs of some of the key parts. I think I'm going to have to buy the paper version as well, as a reference to look back at.
