Summary
The Elizabethan house of Bracketts is about to be turned into a museum. It had once been the home of the celebrated poet Esmund Chadleigh and is to become a shrine to his life and poetry - but the transition is far from smooth. Carole Seddon had been reluctant to join the Bracketts Board, and now she realises that she should have listened to her instinct. The simmering tension between the board members is about to boil over. A human skeleton is discovered in the kitchen garden, and before too long there is a second body, not yet cold. Murder is no longer just a dreadful possibility but a certainty.

Cosy murder mystery
I stumbled on these as I love the Charles Paris mysteries. It's great that they are a series and perfect as audio stories before bedtime or on a rainy afternoon. I particularly like that the characters are middle aged women and more rounded characters than the usual stereotypes. The stories are complete in themselves but added interest comes from additional revelations about the main protagonists' histories. Simon Brett conveys the characters so well in his reading.

Love this series
These characters are interesting and annoying at the same time, I frequently want to slap Carol, but she reminds me of so many people I’ve known.
Easy listening, glad there’s more to ‘read’

Interesting
A bit slow to start and lacking in excitement. I prefer the stories that centre on the relationship between Jude and Carol which this book didn't really. However, the story picked up as the book progressed and the ending was both intriguing and satisfactory.

Great book series
It's funny during the first books I was trying to work out when the books were set. Mobile phones are mentioned and computers, but the have dial up. I had to Google when broadband was commercially available, early 2000s by 2007 it was throughout the UK. This book was set during about 2003 I think. I was 24. Wow, I feel old. This book was fantastic and a bit sad, my heart went out to Jude. We really need to know more about her, I am getting so frustrated with not knowing anything about this woman, it would be very upsetting for Carol not knowing, I do actually find Jude a bit rude. My friends know everything about me, I have to stay friends with them out of necessity, they know to much! The story was really interesting Simon Brett's writing and performance are wonderful. His American accent is not great, I did laugh, but fair play to him he gives it his all and it sounds like he's enjoying himself.

One of the best murder mysteries
Possibly my favourite of the first five books. I like how the main characters develop as well as their relationship and friendship. The story is very well researched and such a good mystery! Simon Brett again amazed me with his gift for describing different characters and insight into human nature, and he is a wonderful narrator. On to the next in the series for me!
