Summary
Elohim is the most frequently used name for God in the Old Testament, occurring over 2,000 times. Elohim is derived from two Hebrew root words. First, El, which means "omnipotent". Additionally, it implies extended control or sustaining power. The ending of the name “Elohim”, him, is plural.
Genesis 1:26-27
"Then God said, 'Let us create man in our image, after our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over the entire earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.' Therefore, God created man in his own image, in the image of God; he created male and female."
Does God's use of plural pronouns imply that there are multiple Gods? No. The plural form of Elohim now reflects the Godhead, the Trinity. God is a trinity, or three persons in one. The fact that He is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is not fully revealed until the New Testament. In the first chapter of Genesis, this name for God appears over 30 times. Elohim is responsible for speaking the universe into existence.
The name Elohim informs us...
God is always present.
Ever-present means that God has always existed. God is self-reliant. God has no needs and therefore is dependent on neither anything nor anyone. We depend on many things for our survival, including air, water, food, gravity, etc., whereas God is completely self-sufficient and requires none of these. He is a God who is powerful, creative, self-existent, and self-sufficient.
The name Elohim informs us...
God as the Creator of everything.
How does this God's name affect you and me? First, we must understand that God did not create us out of necessity. God doesn’t need you or me; we need him.
