Story
When Minalan the Spellmonger was exiled from his beloved mageland of Sevendor by Prince Tavard, his friend Duke Anguin made him Count Palatine of the Magelaw, a vast realm in the Alshari Wilderlands that Minalan is all too familiar with. After the goblin invasion, the province is devastated, ruined, and peopled almost only by freed slaves. But Minalan has brought his recovering wife and family into exile with him, and he views their impoverished fief as an opportunity to build a new City of Magi in the wilderness.

Story
From the moment Dara of Westwood spied the Silver Headed Raptor nesting in Rundeval Peak, the precocious redheaded 12-year-old girl was enchanted. The youngest daughter of the Master of the Wood lived in ramshackle Westwood Hall, in the independently minded Westwood estate of Sevendor. Her determination to capture a baby falcon and train it wasn’t hampered by the fact that Dara had never climbed a mountain, had never been trained in falconry, or even remotely had permission from her father to do it.

Story
Long ago, the world fell into twilight, when the great empires of old consumed each other in sorcerous cataclysms. In the south, the Star Towers fell, swallowed by the sea, while the black glaciers descended upon the northern holdfasts, entombing the cities of Min-Ceruth in ice and sorcery. Then from the ancient empire of Menekar, the paladins of Ama came, putting every surviving sorcerer to the sword and cleansing their taint from the land. The pulse of magic slowed, fading like the heartbeat of a dying man. But after a thousand years, it has begun to quicken again.

The ancient magic of wizards was anything but dark. It was the enlightenment that lifted humanity from the squalor of superstition, and the worship of fell spirits and capricious gods, but those days are gone. The shining glory of the sorcerers burned away the subtlety of wisdom, replacing it with easy power, held only in the hands of the elite - a new age built upon the elemental supremacy of aristocrats and the ignorance of the masses.

It is the year 1537. The great winged lion stares over a Venice where magic thrives. The rich Venetian Republic is a bastion of independence and tolerance. Perhaps for that reason, it is also corrupt, and rotten with intrigue. But for the young brothers, Marco and Benito Valdosta, vagabond and thief, Venice is simply home. They have no idea that they stand at the center of the city's coming struggle for its very life. They know nothing of the powerful forces moving in the background. They have barely heard of Chernobog, demon lord of the north, who is shifting his pawns to attack.

Summary
Company’s coming!
Just when Baron Minalan the Spellmonger figured out there was a slim chance to restore his mind-shattered wife, Alya (if he's willing to journey to the undercaverns of Olum Seheri, the lair of Korbal the Necromancer), things start to go awry: not only does Prince Tavard, his unloved liege lord, decide to conduct an official state visit to Sevendor on pilgrimage to the Everfire on the Briga's feast day, but a mysterious seamage appears at his door with an intriguing offer from the Sea Folk who rule Callidore: They want to buy snowstone. An entire mountain of it.
Between feuding factions of Alka Alon and the contentious nobility of his own kingdom, Minalan is already in arcane intrigue up to his pointy hat, but when the foremost wizard of the age has problems, he also has resources. Before the pilgrimage concludes it sets mighty actions in their courses, and even the gods elect to intervene publicly in Minalan's life.
Minalan realizes that he has little choice but to consider an impossible quest into the heart of his enemy's realm, to the caverns of the dead, themselves, if he is to resolve the many conflicts in play. He must recover an ancient artefact of the Sea Folk known as the Handmaiden, and in order to do so he will have to organize the most audacious raid on the most horrific foe in humanity's history on Callidore! Who else but Minalan the Spellmonger has the magic stones to challenge the undead might of the Necromancer!

An epic book with a bit of everything
I have waited a long time for this audiobook, it was worth the wait. So much happens and the listener gets a bit of everything combat, magical theory, insight into the world and some excellent twists.
A most enjoyable listen for fans of the series.
The narrator does an excellent job for the most part, there are several voices and the book is long. John Lee is very capable. The issue with Sire Ryf and how his name is pronounced did bug me as it changed a few times and its always been the same in previous books.
Author and narrator deserve thanks and I look forward to the next audiobook.

A great series with some glaring issues.
I will be upfront with this review and put it in two parts. First part all the good stuff because I believe this series and book is more good than bad.
This book and series are really some of the most imaginative and fun books currently out there. The characters (exceptions below) are wonderful, the action moves well, the plot is intricate and fun. I really enjoy the work and the voice acting is absolutely top notch. Mancour's take on fantasy is refreshing and so well done.
Now the not so good. Mancour definitely has some real trouble with female characters. While he doesn't overtly hate on them like say Martin does, they definitely run on a wildly different set of guidelines than his male ones. I am probably overly critical because the whole world turns on a character because she refuses the advances of one guy. But it seems the course for the series. If a female in the world wants to be a character she has to accept the advances of any male who wants her or be exiled for being unfair.
Just my take. One spoiler though. I truly hope the character Garath dies in the next book.

Probably My Last
I admit it was an interesting series as far as how it developed. The narrator started off horribly with the first book but got miles more skillful in later ones, though his range of voice changes is limited. This story though is quite meandering and I feel is just designed to keep us trapped in a storyline that needlessly takes years to finish a single villain off. So I think it will have to be my last. It’s book 10 and nothing of meaning has changed except the characters’ relation to each other and how much of the kingdom the main character controls.

With all respect to those that wax derogatorily...
Those that don't appreciate a neo-medieval, post interstellar Distant Mirror need not apply. If you don't understand that, an understanding of Myers-Briggs and how people that are process-oriented think, will help. Terry is certainly one of us. Those that criticize character development and progression must have favorite characters that they want more focus on or they don't appreciate world-building. This is a world that rivals that of Tolkien's Middle Earth Herbert's Dune, and Jordan's world in The Wheel of Time. Of course, there are NPC's here, but this is a vibrant world with back-characters that are alive, participatory, and become part of the story after being absent for several books. While the Spellmoger Wiki is helpful, Terry offers enough memory-jogs to allow you to place them in the universe without extensive research. Cleverly done.
There are roughly 20 books left and I believe that the best is yet to come.

good book except
one of the greatest frustrations of this series is the author's tendency to repeat the same plot information multiple times sometimes within pages of each other. we know how proud min is of sevendoor! if there's so much fluff in this book that it ruins what is a good story. what's interesting is you could actually condence the entire plot line down to it chapter. do I care what color so-and-so as hair is and her brooch? lol

Babies
Omg, I feel like we need to take a step back. Pretty much every plot line has to do with them. Like either complaining about them, having them, moving them, killing them. Some is OK but let's get a bit more meat in it. However still great series just want to see a bit more character building that doesn't involve babies and how to achieve them lol.
