About this listen
Another exciting adventure from the number one New York Times best-selling series!
The darkest secrets are the hardest to bring to light....
Sylvestri Yarrow is on a streak of bad luck with no end in sight. She's been doing her best to keep the family cargo business going after her mom's death, but between mounting debt and increasing attacks by the Nihil on unsuspecting ships, Syl is in danger of losing all she has left of her mother. She heads to the galactic capital of Coruscant for help but gets sidetracked when she's drawn into a squabble between two of the Republic's most powerful families over a patch of space on the frontier. Tangled up in familial politics is the last place Syl wants to be, but the promise of a big payoff is enough to keep her interested....
Meanwhile, Jedi Knight Vernestra Rwoh has been summoned to Coruscant, but with no idea of why or by whom. She and her Padawan, Imri Cantaros, arrive at the capital along with Jedi Master Cohmac Vitus and his Padawan, Reath Silas - and are asked to assist with the property dispute on the frontier. But why? What is so important about an empty patch of space?
The answer will lead Vernestra to a new understanding of her abilities and take Syl back to the past...and to truths that will finally come out of the shadows.
Don't miss any of the adventure and excitement of Star Wars: The High Republic!

Decent listen for a junior novel!
Worth listening to, as it fills in quite a few bits of back story to do with the main adult High repubic novels!

Disappointing performance
Considering there have been multiple titles in this series, you would think the reader would have listened to a couple before recording to ensure consistency, but it doesn’t seem so. So many mispronunciations of words and very little character variation.

Decent story reader almost robotic
The reader uses different pronunciation of main names and groups used in pervious books
At times the reader sounds very robotic and male voices still sound femanine breaking some of the emersion

Solid Story, Frustrating Narration
Another good High Republic series novel, however this particular title is very let down by the narrator. A lot of the time it feels like someone is reading from a script with random bits of punctuation smattered throughout.
I would recommend a sample before purchasing.

Fantastic Ending
The first 20% is good, the last 20% excellent! The middle is a little slow. Sylvestri is meant to be the main character, but Vern and Nan steal the show.

Badly narrated
I really enjoyed the story in this book. Not quite as action packed as the previous 2 but overall introduced some great characters and wasn't overly focussed on the Jedi unlike the previous entries in the series.
The first 2 narrated by Mark Thompson were way more entertaining and played more like a radio drama with all the sound effects and excellent voices Mark did for all the different characters. However this book had none of the bells and whistles I had grown accustomed to and felt very flat. The narrator didn't put half as much energy into the reading as Thompson does and didn't build up any excitement or sense of dread that the previous books did.
Even just adding some low background music would have improved this story tenfold. I listened to the other 2 entries one after the other and found myself hooked but with this installment I found myself having to take alot of breaks just to break up the monotony of the narration which is a shame.
I'm very much looking forward to the next Mark Thompson read book though and feel all the High Republic books should have the same high production values as Light of the Jedi as even though it's very jarring and a bit of sensory overload at first, once you get used to everything that's going on it sucks you in and leaves you wanting more!
Please, no more bland narration! It's not doing the stories any justice!

Story Great, reading not so much
The story is really good, so no faults with that. Might even be best story in high republic collection so far. (I'm going cornerlochically)
The annoying thing is the voice actor/reader pronounces names of main factions/characters completely different to previous books. This might not annoy you but it really bugged me. Blame doesn't fully lie on the actor as clearly it would have gone through multiple checks, but overall have to rate it down for it. The only other critique would be that the voice actor doesn't really distinguish much between characters, and doesn't attempt a lower voice for male characters. Whereas in previous books the actor has done something different for the opposite gender.

Great story, poor performance from the actor
Unlike the 4 previous books, I felt that this was acted poorly and somehow narrated masterfully. I enjoyed the story and new characters, but when the actor started acting the voices, I found they were hardly distinguishable with the worst example of poor voice acting being the matriarch. I thoroughly enjoyed the actor's narration as their voice sounds amazing, but unfortunately, I do not feel that the acting is on par with previous Star Wars books, especially the newer Temptest runner.
p.s Also, can you leave at least two seconds before jumping to the next chapter, it's disconcerting when a major event happens at the end of the chapter which is immediately followed up by Chapter xxx instead of leaving the reader a breath to absorb the event.

Average - tied up loose ends
Really average. Takes a while to get used to the narrator. She is amazing but it takes a bit.
It also skips chapters far too quickly and at times impossible to know who is who.
Overall a decent story because it is Star Wars. Otherwise its a dry romance.
