Summary
When the naked, battered body of an unidentified teenager is found dumped in an alleyway, postmortem finds evidence of a harrowing series of events. Another teenage death with the same MO pushes DI Hannah Robbins and her team on the Nottingham City division Major Crimes Unit to their limits - and across county borders.
In a race against the clock, they attempt to unpick a thick web of lies and deceit to uncover the truth behind the deaths. But it doesn't stop there. When catching a killer isn't enough, just how far are the team willing to push themselves to save the next girl?

Not shallow at all!
Shallow Waters is actually a very deep book! Hannah Robbins is definitely the police officer I would want investigating if I was the victim of a crime. Once she's got the bit between her teeth, she's not going to let go. You can even try to blow her up and she'll brush herself off and get on with the job. I'm not convinced that Ethan the journalist is the best match for her; I think she could do better, but this is only the first book so we will have to see how that plays out. Hannah's back story, especially her imprisoned sister, Zoe, is dangled tantalisingly in front of us and makes sure we will continue to listen to the next in the series. The police officers reaction to finding a dead child struck me as particularly endearing. They were all shocked and it's good to know that even long serving police officers can still find crime upsetting. It took me a while to acclimatise to Colleen Prendergast's narration; she sounds so young. But that's on me, not Colleen. I've reached that age where all police officers, doctors, politicians etc; look like they've just left school and shouldn't be out after dark without their mummies, so pay no attention to my issues. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable, completely credible police procedural that I'm happy to recommend. Now onto Made to Be Broken, Hannah Robbins book 2.

Couldn't stand it
What an utterly dreary novel. I'm not sure if it was the narrator or just the overly precise to the point of boredom description. Worst book I've listened to so far.

Boring
I managed to get halfway through. This was more like the diary of a policewoman. Who drank green tea, vodka & wine. You learn more about who drinks coffee, when the kettle goes on & how untidy station kitchen area is. Totally boring

nice story. I liked the characters slightly spoiled for me by the 'cop unnecessarily alone to create jeopardy'ending

Diabolical
Please save yourself the time and give this a MISS! The narrator should get a new job as this certainly ain’t her calling

Shallow waters = shallow writing
The writer uses knowledge without understanding, she also exhibits prejudice that illustrates ignorance.
For example the plot involves the worst and rarest of paedophilic behaviour, which for some of the offenders is the type of pathological behaviour that does not yield to therapy. However the detective character declares she believes no paedophiles can be cured or otherwise contain their behaviour which is putting a multitude of different characters in the same basket and is simply not true.
This type of fostering dislike or may I say hatred for others with difficulties and /or problematic behaviours is one of the factors that are wrong in our society and the way we look at and treat others.
The author makes great effort to tackle difficult subjects such as a senior team leading detective having a relationship with a journalist, but does not really carry off the depth of the problems involved, resulting in a chick lit sexual relationship. The ending would make any decent police officers angry - as if entry into a suspected dangerous area by a lone female officer would be allowed, - or that they would be followed by the senior detective in charge, again alone.
Lightweight rubbish I would not recommend reading or listening to.
