He puts his abilities to the best use possible and that isn't by being a scientist. Besides, the space station Belvaille doesn't need scientists. It is not, generally, a thinking person's locale. We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

It exploded out of Somalia and spread across the oceans before anybody thought to look up from their cell phones to see what was going on. Summary
Featuring unexpected stabbings, maniacal puppets, and a dog with a head like a testicle, Space Team: The Hunt for Reduk Topa is the 12th book in the Space Team series, and the perfect jumping on point for new listeners.
Sick of the stress, aggravation, and multiple genocides they've had to put up with lately, accidental space hero Cal Carver and his crew set off to start a new life in a distant corner of the galaxy.
Six tedious days of warp-speed and board games later, they arrive in a sector filled with new hope, new opportunities, and new adventures. Too broke to take advantage of any of these things, they are forced to accept a series of increasingly demeaning jobs just to make ends meet.
When one such job leads them to the offices of a sector-wide TV network, Cal signs-up to star in smash-hit game show The Hunt, confident of winning the big cash prize.
What he fails to realize is that the show's premise involves him being chased and killed for the amusement of the viewing public and so Cal must run, fight, and occasionally beg for his life as he attempts to win the game, the money, and his freedom.
But in the entire history of the show, no competitor has ever survived The Hunt, and the network will stop at nothing to keep that record intact....
Space Team: The Hunt for Reduk Topa is the 12th book in the internationally best-selling series from award-winning author Barry J. Hutchison and perfect for fans of Guardians of the Galaxy, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and The Golden Girls.

Wish I would end now
After 12 books the jokes are becoming the same, with a few new moments every now and then.
It's just now got to the point where he's taking done before ideas and just doing that as a book. It's become a TV series with episodes that have no progression on the main story.

Not even the great Phil Thron can rescue this one
I’ve generally enjoyed the Space Team series - they’re a bit up and down in quality (not surprising when there’s over a dozen books) but there’s usually been plenty of positives to outweigh the negatives. Not this time though; halfway through and we hadn’t even got to The Hunt’ show part, which given the summary I’d thought would be a significant part of the plot. Incredibly disappointing.
The characters are the same as ever but the banter is stale and feels increasingly mean spirited rather than teasing (there is a ‘joke’ about sexual assault which serves absolutely no purpose). There is far too much of them meandering about and messing everything up, which can work ok in moderation around a decent plot but here it’s just tedious and I’m not sure why the author wasted so much time on so little content.
It feels to me like the series has become so successful that it’s gone on longer than originally intended and is now becoming just a collection of catchphrases and in-jokes.
To end on something positive though, Phil Thron’s narration/performance is absolutely terrific!

Good fun but really lacking content
I've listened to all the books in the series and felt this one took way long to get to the meat of the story. When we finally got to Reduk, my Alexa announced there was approx 4 hours left in the book. 7 hours of messing about with no real purpose and then a fairly swift ending.
This is fine if you take the book as a sort of slapstick comedy, but I like a good story to go with it, and I felt the first 3/4 of the book was just comedy and no story.
Don't get me wrong, if you are a fan of the series you'll enjoy it, as I did, but it felt like a bit of a con. I honestly can't remember what went on in the first 7 hours. That isn't great.
Phil Thron is masterful as always - what a tallented narrator.

Hutchison & Thron rule.
I will read anything Barry Hutchison writes and will listen to anything Phil Thron narrates. Throw in a green blob, a cyborg, a blue chick, a werewoman, a snarky AI, and an inept(?) human male captain (all with their own 'tudes) and I will tune in to find out what mess they've gotten into. I think this may be the last book but I hope not.

We need more Space Team!
I stubbed my toes on this series back in early 2017 shortly after the first Space Team came out on Audible. It actually had me collapsing to the floor in laughter, making my coworkers fear that I'd suddenly lost my mind.
I've since lost track of just how many times I've listened through this series; I've turned to Space Team for solace, in times when I need to be reminded not to take things too seriously; I've turned to it when I want to laugh; and I've turned to it simply because to scratch the itch of waiting for the next installments to publish.
The story is unlike any other humorous fiction series I've read. It's zainy and goofy, and might at first seem like nothing more than cheap silly jokes and third-rate slapstick, and it's what I would describe as a space opera-esque comedy, much in the vein of Futurama. It doesn't pretend to be anything else, yet, the constant jokes and banter won't save you from falling in love with the characters, or from sympathizing with them through both their griefs and their triumphs.
The performance by Phil Thron is noteworthy in that it is, perhaps, the single greatest pairing between a story and narrator to have ever graced the art of performance literature. His range of registers is enormous, and he gives life to each character, along with unique voices and speech patterns. His cadence and timing knocks it out of the freaking park. The guy is an absolute master, and his performance in this series has made him my favorite narrator on Audible, by many miles.
Phil Thron's performance does Space Team justice, and Space Team's story does Phil Thron justice. Neither wastes anything of the potential of the other.

I didn't want it to end!
It has been such a joy to listen to The Space Team series by Hutchison as performed by Phil Thron. Hutchison really brought his best work and gives a longer journey for this last quest. I will keep an eye out for the comic adventures posted in their kickstarter! Read his funking books, y'all.
