Summary

1851. Wealthy businessman Jacob Welland is dying of consumption and implores private detective Laetitia Rodd to find his beloved brother, whom he has not seen for 10 years.

An impoverished Oxford scholar who left college to live as a wandering hermit, Joshua Welland has been spotted in a gypsy camp, where it was rumoured he was learning great secrets. Her search reconnects Laetitia with a couple from her past, but then a murder is committed. Laetitia's friend, Inspector Blackbeard of Scotland Yard, dismisses her talk of gypsies and secrets, but Laetitia is convinced something sinister lurks in this peaceful landscape.

I really enjoyed this full and complicated mystery

Excellent story, marvellous narrator. Thank you. I would love to find more audio books by this author read by the same narrator.

Surprisingly good

Really enjoyed this ‘costume drama’ crime listen. Good plot with some humour - and well narrated.

Mostly enjoyable

Generally enjoyable - my only issue is with the accent of the lawyer Patrick Flint who is is supposed to be from Co Antrim but sounds as if he is from the very south of Ireland - think a supposed Geordie sounding like a Somerset farmer 🤣

Got bit lost

Enjoyable light romp with twists , I don't often get to guess the murders, sometimes too many names , have to think who is who

Another fun outing for the redoubtable Mrs. Rodd

I did very much enjoy this second Laetitia Rodd adventure. I find the characters, especially Fred, Mary, Inspector Blackbeard and, of course, Lettie herself, very engaging and believable, and the plot has plenty of twists and turns to keep the listener/reader guessing. I have a couple of issues with the narrator, who, on the whole, I like…but why has Inspector Blackbeard changed from Welsh into a true-born Londoner between the first book and this one?!! Same character, same narrator, yet his origins (or at least his accent) seem to have changed completely! I found this a little annoying, especially as I was quite fond of the gently Welsh Blackbeard of the first book. Likewise, can she please make up her mind whether he is Blackbeard or Blackbird?! She vacillates between the two in a rather irritating display of indecision!! Despite these minor niggles, she does generally do a good job of bringing these characters and their adventures to life, and I look forward to Mrs. Rodd’s next adventure being recorded before too long.

Relaxing, light and enjoyable.

An enjoyable, relaxing and fun mystery, if a bit predictable. The best feature of the book is the excellently crafted atmosphere of 1851.

Wonderful listen never disappoints

Austen meets Dickens meets Christie. A lovely book with just the right number of twists. I can’t get enough of Lottie Rodd. It’s desperately sad that the author had such an untimely passing, she has left something joyful in the world. I wish the last book could be made into an audio version, but I will buy a hard copy nevertheless.
