About this listen
British detective Fiona Griffiths, one of the most engaging female protagonists in crime thrillers, is back with a new case to solve.
DC Fiona Griffiths is bored. It's been months since she had a good corpse, let alone a decent murder to deal with, and it's frankly driving her nuts. And then comes the news, and she has to literally stop herself from jumping with joy: not just a murder but a decapitation, with an antique sword no less, and a murder scene that has been laid out like a particularly gruesome crossword clue.
Gaynor Charteris was an archaeologist leading a team excavating a nearby Iron Age site. Genial, respected, well liked, it was hard to see why anyone would want to kill her in such a brutal way. But as Fiona starts to dig beneath the surface, she finds evidence of a crime that leads back to King Arthur and his final battle - a crime so bizarre that getting her superiors to take it seriously is going to be her toughest job. Especially since the crime hasn't yet been committed.

Great read
Good fun to listen to. The writing style seems peculiar to this author and suits the main character.

Marvellous story
I read this book before listening to it and I can tell you that the plot line of this particular story is just as intricate and convoluted as the previous five, it involves a grisly murder which pulls Fiona’s interest away from counting the days since her last ‘good corpse’ and paperclip dinosaur destruction games. It winds up and down the narrow roadways of England and Wales in it’s chase for those elusive clues, involving hedge ramming, a ladder wielding vicar, a crystal shattering visit to Oxford, hostages, a Museum heist, and most interestingly Arthurian legends and fake antiquities in abundance.
I wasn't convinced that anything could match The Dead House but this is certainly as good, if not better, I can't quite decide.
Siriol Jenkins is an excellent narrator but I don't like her accents, Fiona sounds wrong, and even Katie sounded wrong to me, I had given her an entirely different voice in my mind so I'm not enjoying this audiobook as much as I had hoped to but the story is 100% superb, I can recommend it wholeheartedly.

Makes me want to be Welsh
I have devoured all of the series and am now rather devastated to find there are no more (yet?). The books are full of marvellous characters bound by wonderful plotting with a depth of research that leaves me awestruck. Great descriptive writing - really beautiful and DS Fiona Griffiths is the best female lead I have ever read.

Brilliant!
Fantastic series of novels - this being one of the best! Contains all the high quality ingredients required for a 'consumed in one sitting' audio book; murder, mystery, baddies (very bad ones), humour, as well as some very realistic Welsh characters!

Gutted ..... that this is the last book in the series
I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book and all the others in this series - one after another.
The complexity of the characters are wonderful and allow your mind to wander in places you’ve never been and situations you’d never choose to be in.
The narrator was awesome too. Please don’t consider changing Siriol! That beautiful accent lends so much reality to the storyline.
Now sitting waiting non-too patiently for the next one.
Thank you

The perfect writer and narrator combination
Harry and Siriol are an unbeatable team. I’ve really enjoyed all the books in this series and hope there will be many more to come.

Brilliant
Five stars not enough. How long must I wait with Fiona for the next body. I feel her pain. As always a brilliant read with beautiful descriptive writing. I just want to go to Wales and rediscover

could not finish this one
Could not finish, unusual for me. Too many unfamiliar words, plot had no consistency, narration droll.
