Summary

The second book in an emotional and heartwarming WWII series. For fans of Ellie Dean and Annie Groves.

Dover, 1940

As the Battle of Britain rages, the Castle family are standing their ground at the heart of the community, running Castle's Café. German guns shell Dover and danger lurks around every corner, but despite this, Lily Castle is excited to be starting her nursing career at last.

Lily is enjoying her life. She's a good nurse, has a group of friends at the hospital and there is romance on the horizon. That is until her world comes crashing down around her. When she tries to help an injured prisoner of war at the hospital, she ends up implicated in a crime. With her career, relationships and reputation at stake, Lily must fight to clear her name - before it's too late.

Meanwhile, there are strange goings on at the café. Rumours are circulating, and there are secrets that won't stay hidden for long. Secrets that could tear the Castle family apart - once and for all.

a modern soap in a world was two setting

Brilliant. True investment in the character's brings alive the impact of the war on a small town community struggling against adversity and the constant enemy threat. Things happen and the consequences have to be dealt with. It's real life in a historical context, absolutely brilliant.

addicted to the story

I love the narrator and the 2nd book was just as great as the 1st one

Built up with depth the characters really enjoyed it.
I am a little confused and that's easy for me but the accent is almost cockney but the location is Dover. Have I missed something?

Loved it!

I don't usually read books of this genre, preferring Crime fiction but this one was fantastic. The author really takes you back to the 40's and the wonderful characters of the Castle family. The narrator brings the characters to life and truly has different voices for each person. I cannot wait for the 3rd book and will try more books like this in the future.
