Summary

My name is Becky. I arrived home to find my husband, Chris, stabbed to death and a gang of men ransacking our house. Turns out that Chris had something that belonged to them. And if I want to stay alive, I have to find it and return it. They’ve given me seven days. And a beating. There is nowhere to hide and no time left to look. So I will stand my ground as the deadline approaches. All I have is a head full of lies and a very bad plan. This is my story.

great book, highly recommended

What a great twisty, fast paced book, and a wry sense of humour. Loved the main character and her humour. Listened in 2 sittings, really enjoyed this. It keeps you engaged throughout.

Fast paced

A book that never stopped, fast paced with loads of twists and turns. Becky the central character was someone you thought you understood only for it all to change and then change again. A gritty, complicated, mad character who drew you into her world and her story. The pace made you want to keep listening to see what happened next. An engaging read, well narrated and I didn’t want to stop listening to find out what happened.

Book review

I would recommend this quick paced book. As the book progressed the main character’s character emerged, at the end of the book my opinion of her was very different. As the plot twisted and turned I became more and more intrigued. A most enjoyable book.

Gripping

A gripping psychological thriller with plenty of twists and turns. This book was a cleverly woven story that begins with Becky finding her husband dead and continues headlong into intrigue and mayhem. There follows danger at every turn. The constant swearing was handled admirably by the narrator Colleen MacMahon who brought the story to life by getting inside the characters heads and delivering them in a way that was in keeping with the book. The book is full of surprises.

Lots of twists and turns

4.25⭐️

A stand-alone mystery thriller with a crime element. This is one of my go to authors, different to the other books of his I’ve read.

I had the audiobook read by Colleen MacMahon. A narrator I really enjoy listening to.

Becky arrived home to find her husband Chris dead, and her home being ransacked. They want something that belongs to them, and have given her 7 days to return it, and a beating to reinforce the message.

The narrator is Becky, it has a chatty style. We learn of Chris and Becky’s plan to outdo a major criminal with a cringy name of mr Savage, with the aim of getting rich. Neither are your usual criminals, Becky is a librarian, Chris works for the police in intelligence. The story moves between before Chris dies and Becky’s subsequent struggle with mr Savage. I can’t say that I liked Becky or Sienna (her best friend) they are both so mercenary.
It’s an action packed treasure hunt and rollercoaster ride which gives it a good pace with plenty of interest throughout. Lots of twists and turns, one I initially struggled with the believability of, but the author sold it to me. On occasion I felt that the tension felt a bit over done, it’s so hard to make it seem effortless.

It’s one I’d recommend reading/ listening to.

A fabulous ride

Rebecca and Chris are a blissfully happy married couple of 20 years plus, so when Becky arrives home from work to find her beloved Chris dead on their lounge floor and strange men ransacking her house, all hell breaks loose. My goodness, what an exhausting time ensues. By half way I was having to listen whilst lying down! This is one of my 'double dipper' books. I've read the book and listened to the audio version. What an amazing job Colleen MacMahon does, bringing Becky to life. Her beautiful BBC English juxtaposes perfectly with the foul language Becky prefers to employ. Of all the possible revelations and scenarios you might imagine, the denouement in this story will completely floor you. I'd already read the book and was still amazed all over again. It's a very clever plot, which Mr Barrett executes perfectly. An absorbing and compelling tale, liberally sprinkled with dark humour, which will keep the listener engrossed the entire time. I'm thrilled and privileged to highly recommend The End of Lies as 8+ hours of fabulous entertainment.

Great listen!

This book isn't quite a 5 star listen for me but I did enjoy it. I liked the fact that the heroine was a fairly ordinary person. Her husband similarly was an ordinary guy. They had ordinary jobs but Andrew Barratt spun an extra ordinary tale around them. I listen to a lot of books by American authors so I'm used to reading about situations that could never happen to me. But the beauty of this book is that it was totally believable and could happen and that made it fun.

I never talk about plots in my reviews because I've had countless books spoiled for me by reviewers who have given away too much. Just rest assured that there are enough twists and turns in this story to keep you guessing.

The reason I didn't give it 5 stars... I'm not a huge fan of unnecessary swearing. Not because I'm a prude - far from it. But lots of swearing means I can't have it on speaker at work while I'm doing stuff in my lunchtime in case a child wanders in. So it cuts down my listening time.

Colleen MacMahon did a good job with the narration too.

I will look out for more Andrew Barratt books.
