Summary

The second book in the Nightfall Saga, the stunning new epic fantasy series set in the world of the Demon Cycle, from New York Times bestselling author Peter V. Brett.

Humanity thought the war with demonkind was over. Now, after less than a generation to rebuild, the demon corelings have returned with a vengeance. The Spear of Ala—the fortress that stands at the gates of the demon’s hive—is the last bastion against the horde, and reports say it may already have fallen.

Olive Paper is expected to take the vanguard in the fight. Only an heir of Kaji can wield the artifact that opens the gates of the Spear of Ala, and as Ahmann Jardir’s child, Olive seems destined for a role as leader and savior. But Olive does not wish to follow in her father’s footsteps any more than she did her mother’s.

Darin Bales was born with supernatural senses that he struggles to process, so much that even those who love him believe he can barely take care of himself. Yet to save his mother from the clutches of Alagai Ka, the demon king, Darin will brave anything to mount a rescue.

Darin and Olive each strive to walk their own path but find themselves inextricably tied to the legacies of their parents and to a fated confrontation with the demon king and his new hatchling queen. If they fail, humanity may not survive.

Great to continue the story

Very happy that Peter is continuing the story with another instalment but the narration has really ruined this one for me.
Changing how characters sound and pronounce words used through the series is really charging and removes you from the story.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

It's a great world

Really enjoyed the book, but unfortunately the narration is terrible. It's like having a successful TV show and then in season 6 you change the lead actors and pretend everything is the same. There is a few names they get wrong which is infuriating. it breaks the characters. what a shame.

Another fantastic installment!

Great story. Absolutely loved it. Although Colin mace has been and will always be the best narrator. I didn't mind these two. Slightly annoying when words are pronounced different but I try not to let it bother me too much.

I want more !!

I'd been so looking forward to this. and it didn't disappoint, as always. I love the world Peter has created. The back stories, the reality of war, different beliefs and the fact that not everyone comes out of it in one piece. The narrators are different to one's I listen to on The Desert Prince, and I was worried at first that I wouldn't take to them, but after one chapter I began to love them. 10 out of 10 from me 😀

Ruined by narrator

Loved all the books so far but the narrators are terrible. The mis pronounce place and people all the time which makes it hard to follow.

Story and narrators!

Excellent story and great voice actors! I read previous books and thinking now to buy the audio version of the whole saga.

Disappointed

The story seems to force undertones of issues that are currently relevant. The narrators does not help the story at all.

great book, distracting narrators

enjoyed this book as it was written, but not as much as the others in the series due to the pronunciation of names being totally different to the rest of the series, accents were distracting of the readers and there wasn't much change in tone and pace for very important and exciting parts so I often had to re-listen when I realised it was an exciting bit.
