Summary
The Tutorial has progressed in unexpected ways as Jake is soon forced to confront reality....
Jake has finally found a personal goal of his own as he gains a quest to defeat three more Beast Lords before he can face the final opponent of the Tutorial: The King of the Forest. Something he happily does, fully immersing himself in grasping power and gaining levels as he hunts through Dungeons to kill stronger and stronger foes.
In another region of the Tutorial, turmoil amongst the humans quickly died down after a disastrous battle leaves nearly everyone except the Metal Mage William dead.
Will Jake be able to hunt down the King of the Forest before the Tutorial ends? Does William wake up in time to create even more chaos and fulfill his goal of killing everyone? Who will survive till the end and return to Earth once more?
Oh, and will Jake ever get a shirt that doesn’t get ripped apart in every single fight?

Excellent setting development and system storytelling, but seriously flawed storytelling
All LITRPG books are about preposterous badasses, and if you’ve gotten this far in the Primal Hunter series, you’ll know this one is about the most edgy of edgelords.
Honestly, this book is a very two sided affair, a love it or hate it novel based entirely around how much you can stomach the poor characterisation and utter isolation of the main character.
The way in which characters interact with the system is refreshingly Freeform, free from meaningless numbers and somewhat believable, as is the wider society which the post-apocalyptic earth joins. The choice of ‘Hunter’ for the main character is excellent, while I love wizards, so many LITRPG novels focus on wizard classes - and this one does go that way, but the alchemical elements are really well done. But the poisons… honestly are the weakest part, being… well, stereotypically edgelord and very much more ‘assassin’ than ‘Primal Hunter’.
The mechanical advancement is good, and while heavier than I would write in places, and still derivative in terms of it’s J/CRPG ‘S-G Rank, Powers every X levels, evolve every Y, S rank is always the biggest’ elements, I think it actually strikes a very good balance between crunch and flexibility.
(Although, could the main character not select the 5th power option he gets every level bar a few, please? It’s… poor writing.)
In short: There are far better series for character development, and for characterisation but in terms of system and growth storytelling this series is excellent and surprisingly compelling, flawed only by a tendency to repeat the same information every few chapters as the character muses on life in his own head.
But - and this is fair warning - Jake is a *total* raging edgelord, and no amount of him mocking himself for his all black outfit will change the *terrible* writing in chapters 38 and 39.

Great 2nd book.
Really good second entry to the series.
Pace is good, didn't feel rushed or too slow.
As all of Travis' narrations he's amazing.

Love the references
I'm loving the random references the author drops in between the story, First it was the boy with a scar, then a kid with orange overall 😂. There are more and it's enjoyable knowing what they're referencing.

A great listen/read
Only on the second instalment of ‘the primal hunter’ and already hooked! Classic tropes of the genre used in interesting and tension building ways keep the story from stagnating. Plus.. battles, dungeons, loot, gods and unbelievable power.. what’s not to like? And as a final foot note, the malefic viper is fast becoming one of my favourite fictional characters! Thoroughly enjoyable.

Great character progression and boss fights
This is a good continuation of the first and the ending of the book opens the plot up massively.
