Summary

DCI Nelson has been receiving threatening letters telling him to 'go to the stone circle and rescue the innocent who is buried there'. He is shaken, not only because children are very much on his mind, with Michelle's baby due to be born, but because although the letters are anonymous, they are somehow familiar. They read like the letters that first drew him into the case of The Crossing Places, and to Ruth. But the author of those letters is dead. Or are they?

Meanwhile, Ruth is working on a dig in the Saltmarsh - another henge, known by the archaeologists as the stone circle - trying not to think about the baby. Then bones are found on the site and identified as those of Margaret Lacey, a 12-year-old girl who disappeared 30 years ago.

As the Margaret Lacey case progresses, more and more aspects of it begin to hark back to that first case of The Crossing Places, and to Scarlett Henderson, the girl Nelson couldn't save. The past is reaching out for Ruth and Nelson, and its grip is deadly.

An atmospheric series

I love all these books about Ruth and the wonderful atmosphere evoked in them of the marshland and sea. I enjoy the mysteries and the suspense and excitement and the characters , some great, some flawed and some pure evil. Only good writing can achieve all this for me and in this series, I have found it.

One more please

Loved it .As usual you just want Ruth to have a happy ending with Nelson. But. Hope there is a number twelve as I can’t get enough of this romantic detective and mesmerising atmosphere of the Norfolk I live in and love.

Interesting story

Annoying private lives saga

The never ending back and forth of Ruth and Nelson's relationship is just as tedious as always.

Not disappointed!

When you have read/heard so many stories by the same author in the same series, it would be easy to think that eventually, you’re going to become bored. Not so. This is another enjoyable story which certainly did not disappoint.
I look forward to the next one!!!

Another enveloping listen

I’m so invested in the characters after listening to all of the previous books that the cases almost come second but it’s a thoroughly enveloping story meaning I wanted to listen to the the whole thing in one sitting but made myself take it slower!!!

A Treat to be back with Dr Gallaoway

It was a joy to be back with Dr Ruth, Chief Inspector Nelson, Casbad and co. The story kept me enthralled from bedroom to kitchen and I was sad when it ended - I just hope there will be more about these fascinating characters and the archaeological finds. I hope Ruth doesn't vacate her lonely cottage on the marshes as she is threatening to do, though the situation with Nelson must be hard for both of them

Perfect

I thoroughly adore these books, I can actually sence Ruth like a shadow of my own life which makes her very real to me, she has normal issues which can make you laugh outloud, I love the social side of the story, the mystery side is also brilliant running side by side equally as superb and keeps you guessing till the end with lots of twists and Turns, we need more books please.

Interesting story

shows the way the police work even on cases that date back thirty years, which shows that one is never safe from the law if you do something wrong.
