Summary

'Della's story is tragic, shocking and heart-breaking, but she must be heard. Della is an inspirational and dedicated campaigner who I've been proud to support. Her book eloquently portrays her past vulnerability and her steadfast determination to help others. A must read' Sarah Champion, MP

'I'd been the unwanted child, the little girl who got in the way. I swore I'd put my abuser behind bars and I'd fight with every breath in my body against the life sentence he'd given me. This was my time.'

Della Wright is an incredible campaigner for the rights of abuse victims after suffering a lifetime of betrayal.

Left alone at home for the first time at only two years old by those tasked with her care, Della was let down first by social services. When known paedophile Terry Price entered her life when she was six, moving into her home, he would groom and sexually abuse her for the next five years. Even the sight of a little girl going to his probation meetings wasn't enough to make the authorities act.

After a lifetime of violent relationships and mental health problems, Della eventually managed to put her childhood abuser behind bars for 22 years, a decade after first going to the police. He had changed his name multiple times to evade detection for his many crimes.

As an ambassador for the Safeguarding Alliance, Della now campaigns to ensure offenders cannot slip through the net by giving themselves new identities. She has vowed to try and stop anyone experiencing the same neglect, betrayal and abuse she did.

Sad and raw story

I listen to a lot of these true stories, I find them a huge help , what happened was absolutely horrendous and no child or anyone should have to deal with such sickening abuse, and due to such a flawed system these horrific things will continue to happen, as for the book itself id give 3/4 stars just because it was extremely repetitive and a lot longer than needed, due to this it would sometimes lose my interest, definitely worth listening to just expect to hear the same thing a few times,

very well written and narrated

This was a really good book and well narrated. definitely recommend it. However the story is horrible and I can not imagine how the system could fail her like that. I have to admid I did not know how much this can influence the life of a "surviver".

Captivating and well presented book.

It’s unbearable that a child should experience such a childhood and not be protected. Every social services member of staff should listen to this.

outstanding book

this story is very sad about the true events that this girl had to live through. so many mistakes made by social services and such lonely moments in a child life. yet brave enough to share their heartbreak of growing up with such bad parents and no love to support them through this terrible time. the storyteller has done a fantastic job of Describing the real events. I would recommend this book . the hope and love and strength this girl put in her life to survive is remarkable.

Excellent

The story was told so honestly but goes to show how unjust and how cruel this world can be over and over again.

Well written true to life survival story

I've listed to this book twice. It is captivating. It's very well written. It's a very emotional journey of recovery. This young lady has captivated my heart with her bravery, determination, and encouragement. I would encourage people to read this and share it. It has opened my eyes to see how far we need to go still to protect children from abuse and neglect and a society that needs a good eye opener.

Most horrific life abuse story i have EVER read and i have read thousands of books in my lifetime. I had to take a week break from any other reading after I finished this book in a day! What a sad sad sad world we live in.
I hope the survivor of this story will find a peace and kindness in the end xx

Trapped.

How heartbreaking and read excellently, I teared up, it did bring up bad memories of my own child abuse growing up. chapter 25 hit home for me. so so proud you finally got some justice. i didnt take any of mine to court ,( they are actually dead now..) I'm sure ( know) my family would turn their back on me as they won't picture me as that 3 Yr old and that 9 Yr old, but only as the adult I am now. thank goodness for survivors.

A harrowing journey told with bravery and dignity.

Della’s journey has been filled with so many truly awful incidents, so many preventable things. She has been let down again and and again and it’s hard to read just how many times the people who should have been caring for her, both family and the wider society turned a blind eye over and over.
Her story is told with dignity, bravery and determination to make a lasting change for future generations.
I know personally that Della has grown into a truly beautiful human being inside and out and the incredibly tough life she has dealt with, has not left her cold and hard, but caring, kind, open and determined to help our future generations by changing the law.
This book is a must read to understand not only her own personal journey, but the loophole that exists in the law currently and how she is tirelessly trying to change this.
I am immensely proud of all she has achieved and will no doubt go onto achieve in the future.
