Summary

In her brand-new series Thrown Away Children, Louise Allen shares the harrowing stories she is exposed to as a foster mother. The first in the series, Stella's Story, tells the astonishing true story of a young girl scarred by an abusive past.

Named after the lager that christened her at birth, Stella's life is characterised instability and neglect. Her teenage mother abandons her in the first few weeks of her life, and left in the 'care' of her father, she ends up lying deserted in a house with no food, no water, no clothes and no warmth.

She eventually lands in the care of foster carer Louise, who is determined to change her life for the better. Things seem to be going well - but when Stella has a startling response to having her photo taken, it becomes clear the scars of her abuse run deeper than anyone could have ever guessed.

Overall a good read

I really like the story, and the background before she came into care. but found the book a bit confusing at times, it felt a little slow in the beginning, and rushed in the end

Compelling

What a rollercoaster of a life story. It depicts the ridiculousness of social workers and the joy and admiration for foster carers. I hope Stella has a wonderful life. I’d have liked a paragraph updating Louise as I’m sure she too was incredibly proud

Stella's heartbreaking story

Louise has a beautiful way of sharing her fostering memoirs, how herself & Lloyd treat each child as an individual ans with the utmost value, love & respect, which is clear throughout, and her books are exceptionally well written. I'd compare her to Cathy Glass, but with more insight into how the fostering & care systems work here in the UK.

Stella's story is an exceptionally stark, heartbreaking one but is the sad, horrendous reality for many children in this world. I'm so glad she was able to gain so many positive, loving & supportive people in her life from Louise, Lloyd & family, WPC Watters to Danny Dan and her adopted family.

As always, the narration by Melanie Crawley, brings Louise's memoirs to life. She has a warm, easy to listen to voice & uses the same characterisation voice & accent wise throughout.

Heartbreaking yet so inspirational

.....this is my 3rd listen, and I grow each time, feel the pain, cry and, yet somehow, I am given hope for other survivors of this too prevalent abuse and suffering that we realize is everywhere. People who commit these crimes should never be allowed to see daylight again.

So much detail; not much story.

Felt little self flagellating and so much detail to describe every little thing! Purple prosey.

Really well read and written

Enjoyed this as my first listen to this authors work. It does trigger every now and then of the trauma I am currently going through as a foster carer with false allegations against me and hearing how the family were suspended for 6 months but continued thereafter does reassure me.

Amazing!

This book is so well written, I was immediately hooked and on an emotional rollercoaster throughout. Louise addresses very seriously issues surrounding child abuse and what children in care go through as well as going in-depth about her own childhood experiences. If you like Cathy Glass, you will enjoy these audiobooks.
