About this listen
Henry Pulling, a retired bank manager, meets his septuagenarian Aunt Augusta for the first time in over 50 years at his mother’s funeral. Soon after, she persuades Henry to abandon South wood, his dahlias and the Major next door to travel through Brighton, Paris, Istanbul, Paraguay...
Accompanying his aunt, Henry joins a shiftless, twilight society: mixing with hippies, war criminals and CIA men, as well as smoking pot, breaking all the currency regulations and eventually coming alive after a dull suburban life.

Very enjoyable, and fun
This is quite different to my normal reading, but I did enjoy it immensely. Quite a far fetched tale, but nevertheless one took to the 'cast' and it was great fun to watch the staid ex bank manager 'loosen up' and surprise even himself with his exploits!!

an amazing book. controversial, thought-provoking
Like a moth transfixed by a flame I listened on to this page turner by the sublime Graham Green. The reader Tim Pigott-Smith was perfect , intonation and character depiction, flawless. And the beauty of this book as a work of art , kept me engaged, however I disliked the characters except for Henry and even he let me down at last. I am aspergers so I can't tolerate injustice or immorality on any level. Its a flaw in my character apparently, but nonetheless, it means I cannot empathise with those who will act out of self interest alone and at the detriment and suffering of others. For that personal reason I gave the book 4 stars instead of 5. There is perhaps one exception to my puritanical sense which I reserve for Wordsworth, who despite walking a crooked line, had an innocence and good heart, making him exempt from my condemnation. A poetic read despite the sordid company of characters that accompany you on this extraordinary adventure.

Fantastic Narration
Quirky, humorous classic brilliantly narrated! Giving different characters their own voices and dialects rarely works but Tim Pigott-Smith smashed it!

I travelled with ‘my aunt’
I did not know of this book, but was enthralled by Tim Pigott Smith’s narration - brilliant is the only word to describe his story telling.
For me, also, the gentle pace fitted the era .

Wonderful story
The story has sweet adventure as its theme all the way through. But the key is the storytelling. Tim's narration is perfect. Each character is brought to life and you are absorbed into the journey. :)

Some questionable accents!
Narrating at a comfortable speed, Tim Piggot Smith's voice is perfect for this story except for a couple of distractingly odd accents. In retrospect I can enjoy this as an additional layer of humour.

Simply wonderful.
A great story. Tim Piggott Smith's narration is worthy of an Oscar. Simply superb. His mastery of the characters' different accents is amazing. Highly recommended.

Tim Pigott Smith is Superb!
This is a very pleasing undemanding listen..Tim Pigott Smith gives a stellar performance and completely captures the journey of Henry Pulling who has taken early retirement . That said the plot is rather obvious and I do cringe at pivotal plot events coming from remarkable coincidences. There was certainly a wonderful idea here in the story and somehow never fully blossoms as it might have done. I had heard that it is very funny but I think only once did I find myself giving a small chuckle so it might be very much a matter of where one's comic taste is. However it carries you along to its conclusion

Wonderful narration
I have read several books by Graham Greene and this is amongst my favourites..The characters are brought to life brilliantly by the narrator, ranging from high farce in the first few chapters to the pathos of the ending. Loved it!
