Summary

Have you, a friend or family member been living with undiagnosed autism?

For every visibly autistic person you meet, there are countless 'masked' people who pass as neurotypical. They don't fit the stereotypical mould of autism and are often forced by necessity to mask who they are, spending their entire lives trying to hide their autistic traits. In particular, there is evidence that autism remains significantly undiagnosed in women, people of colour, trans and gender non-conforming people, many of whom are only now starting to recognise those traits later in life.

Blending cutting-edge research, personal insights and practical exercises for self-expression, Dr Devon Price examines the phenomenon of 'masking', making a passionate argument for radical authenticity and non-conformity. A powerful call for change, Unmasking Autism gifts its listeners with the tools to uncover their true selves and build a new society—one where everyone can thrive on their own terms.

A must read for all

A great, easy to understand book that is a must for everyone. Those who are autistic, those who think they are, and those who definitely aren't neurodivergent will get so much from this book. Totally enables compassion and understanding and appreciation of the brilliance and challenges of autism and neurodivergency.

Very Informative

This was so helpful on giving me the confidence to address my own struggles but also to talk to my girls about their traits of autism. It is presented in a way that helps you to understand the presentation of the traits rather than just understanding them in theory. Well worth a listen!

INCREDIBLE! A must read for EVERYONE!

Devon you so eloquently explained the intricacies and nuances of being neurodiverse. As well as how we can all, including neurotypical individuals, help to create a society that is truly inclusive!
It helped to explain my life so much.

Informative, Accessible, and Affirming

Whether you are autistic, think you might be, or simply want to understand autism better and help make the world a more inclusive place for neurodivergent people, this is a perfect starting point. Clearly written, deeply informative, inclusive in the perspectives and experiences it explores and the voices it amplifies, and empowering in the exercises it invites you to undertake, I found it incredibly useful in reflecting on my own masking behaviours, identifying their origins, and learning how to leave them behind.

Affirming and Informative for those Late Diagnosed

As a late diagnosed Autistic, there were many moments in this book that were so relieving, relatable and affirming to hear. I have researched the topic extensively but there was still information and comfort to be found that I hadn't encountered before. It was intersectional, accessible and up-to-date. I highly recommend.

A balm for my cuts and bruises

Like "Laziness does not exist" this book made me feel SO seen and comforted as a self-realized neurodivergent person (self-realized in place of self-diagnosed, read the book for an explanation).
I had been trying to rewrite my story by accepting some things about myself, but neurodivergent traits were very difficult to embrace. I still struggle with low self-esteem and maybe always will, but reading this book made me want to reclaim my identity: integrate more and mask less. "Unmasking autism" is a motivational piece as well, it will make you want to advocate for yourself and others, and modify the hell out of your life to accommodate your needs.
I love how he presents the arguments for policy and societal change alongside the stories, studies and anecdotes. All of this is, and will always be, political and structural.
A must-read for anyone interested in understanding this type of disability and healing from everyday ableism.
Thank you Devon Price!
