Summary

In the best-selling tradition of Smashed and The Glass Castle, this raw, eye-opening memoir tells the powerful story of Elizabeth Garrison's fractured childhood, descent into teenage drug addiction, and struggle to overcome nearly insurmountable odds.

Elizabeth invites the listener behind the closed doors of a picture-perfect Christian family to reveal a dark, hidden world of child abuse, domestic violence, and chilling family secrets all performed in the name of God under the tyrannical rule of her father.

Like countless teenage girls, Elizabeth turns to drugs and alcohol to escape. With smack-you-in-the-face honesty, Elizabeth chronicles the dark realities and real-life horrors of teenage drug abuse, living on the streets, foster homes, and treatment centers. She paints an unsparing portrait of scratching and clawing her way out of the grips of child abuse, addiction, and betrayal to find the strength within herself to save her own life.

Contains mature themes.

Gripping

I nearly ditched this book after listening to the first half an hour because I thought it might be one of self indulgent privilege. I’m so glad I didn’t! Hard to listen to at times yet providing a grim insight into life alongside drugs and dealers, the story is very well told and well narrated.

Elizabeth

Good story. What a horrible childhood. But came out the other side. Wish she’d taken her father to court.

Very involving, great writting

Quite recently, I have read a memoir of a woman who, during her childhood, was locked up in her body and not able to communicate with outside world. I found myself feeling disengaged whilst reading this book and felt disapointed that the author managed to make such an interesting topic so boring. So I really appreciated "Wounds of a father" for how involved I felt listening to it. It was hard to put the book down.

An amazing story of strength and courage. Not an easy listen in some places, but makes you appreciate how much this amazing girl, now woman has gone through and survived. I hope she does a follow up book with her life after this…..
