Summary

Book 13 in the internationally best-selling Chronicles of St Mary's series.

For fans of Richard Osman's Thursday Murder Club series, Jasper Fforde and Doctor Who.

Finally—finally!—Max has that nice office job she's always wanted. The one with no heavy lifting and no one tries to kill her. Well, one out of two's not bad....

Punching well above their weight, Max and Markham set out to bring down a sinister organisation founded in the future—with a suspicious focus on the past.

Max's focus is staying alive long enough to reunite with Leon and Matthew, alternately helped and hindered by St Mary's—who aren't always the blessing they like to think they are.

But non-stop leaping around the timeline—from witnessing Magna Carta to disturbing a certain young man with a penchant for gunpowder—is beginning to take its toll. Is Max going mad? Or are the ghosts of the past finally catching up with her?

Fire-truckingly brilliant.

5 stars for the story, 5 stars for the performance and this gives 5 stars overall.

If you haven’t read the previous stories you won’t be disappointed and if you have this is up there with the rest of them.

Thank you Jodi & Zara.

A weaving together - ❤️ St Mary's

Two of my heroines, Jodi Taylor and Zara Ramm ... and some of my favourite people ever - the St Mary's crew!

Make sure you've listened to the whole series in order before this one; there's so much of the past in this present. Won't say more ... just know it's bloody bollocking brilliant!!!

What a delight!

Jodi Taylor and Zara Ramm never let me down! All the expected twists and turns, together with some unexpected ones - and all left nicely up in the air for the next one in the series! So clever!

as usual - brilliant!

Great story, with impeccable narration. I am so impatient for the next volume in this fantastic book series.
Thirteen books, plus the short stories, and all as fresh and enjoyable as the first. No other author has ever done that for me.

Always fun, but...

I love Jodi's work, especially this series and Markham is one of my favorite characters. I must admit that I awaited this pre-order with mixed emotions. since leaving St Mary's, I've found Max's adventure less engaging and a shade too dark. Sadly, I found this book to be the sane; it drags a bit and is definitely more depressing than the early series books. There are definite moments of comic brilliance and Max's is generally her beloved sarcastic self - though a bit too mean at times. Markham is less his funny, accident prone self. There's also periods of focusing on duller story elements that feel like filler.

While I am still a St Mary's devotee, and would assuredly buy any future books, I do think this is one of the weakest.

Just Awesome!

This book was non-stop action. I absolutely loved it! Jodi has the most amazing talent for wild fiction! The Time Wars are beginning! So much happens it was hard to keep up! And what was going on with Max? So many flashbacks! I'm glad we don't have to wait for the answer. I can't wait for the next book!! Love Zara Ramm's narration!

Overwritten

It's not easy to keep a series going when development of the main events of the primary characters' lives and personalities has pretty much ended. Taylor keeps the interest going with new conflicts, but in some ways this book reads like fan fiction, an exaggeration of itself. The humor of the books often relies on Max's speculations and opinions; in this book they're not very funny because they go on and on with pointless "maybe this" and "would that" at every action point, both slowing the action and becoming irritating.
When an author becomes successful and has a guaranteed fan base, the writing often gets sloppy, the books longer and longer with filler that a good editor should cut. Or that a wise author should cut. I hope Taylor doesn't continue on this road with the St. Mary's series.

I finished the newest St Marys roughly 7 seconds ago and I’m already having withdrawals. Jodi Taylor, you are a gift!

Love this series!!!!!

Love the adventures of Max. Leon, Markham and Peterson. Great way to shift placement of the group. The ending chapters were “The Best”!! Oh my gosh… the Time Police?

At times a bit slow, but thoroughly enjoyable.

No, I thought Leon and Maxwell was the paramedics. The non-kaboom bit was a bit slow.
