Summary

The Latest Tom Reynolds mystery from the internationally best-selling author of The Perfect Lie.

Nobody was supposed to get out alive.

On a Dublin city street, packed with afternoon shoppers, a young woman appears, naked, traumatised and bearing burn marks.

Tom Reynolds, now Chief Superintendent, is no longer head of the murder squad. But when it transpires the woman escaped from a house fire started deliberately and that there are more victims, Tom is sucked in. What begins as a straightforward case of arson, soon becomes something much more sinister.

The people in that house never wanted to be there in the first place. Now more of them are missing. Tom is faced with a ticking clock as he tries to locate the others and as he does, a terrifying spider's web of domestic and international crime unfolds.

And not everybody will survive the fall-out.

Fanciful story of a murky underworld

I have listened to a couple of Jo Spain's previous books and really enjoyed them. This is the first of the Tom Reynolds stories I have listened to and I was a little concerned that I would be missing out having not read the first five. I need not have worried as although Reynolds is the police Superintendent who leads the case, he is by no means the centre of the story.

This book immediately grabs the readers /listeners attention as we hear of a dazed and confused naked and burned woman on a city street. Naturally, the mystery revolves around who she is and what she was doing and we are soon taken into a murky underground world. The plot unfolds nicely and we meet several unsavoury characters and hear some shocking stories along the way.

The strength of this book is the way that the story mushrooms from a simple arson case and takes us to a sinister world that is unthinkable to many. The author lets her imagination run riot with the story line, some of which was, for me anyway, a little hard to follow at times, but reaches a satisfying conclusion, as all goods books should.

I loved the narration of Aoife McMahon too. I had previously heard her narrate previous Jo Spain books and also the excellent Normal People by Sally Rooney. I would look out for other books read by Aoife McMahon as she is excellent.

Brilliant

Jo Spain is utterly brilliant. I have spent the last week listening to all this series of books and am now bereft that I have come to the end.

Not for me.

Narrator could not master different accents, and in my opinion the book wasn't worth putting up with it. Managed 6 chapters only.

Boring

I’ve listened to a few of Jo’s novels and really enjoyed them but unfortunately this was very disappointing. Story line very flat and out come predictable from the very early chapters. Dreadful attempts at different accents, especially the ‘Geordi’ one

Another cracking installment!

Absolutely love Jo Spain's work. Like all the others, this story was gripping, well paced and intriguing. Not so complex that you were just left baffled. Takes you along with it. Likeable characters and superb narration, although the Newcastle accent did make me laugh a little. Just loved it. Hope you are already working on the next one Jo, can't bare to wait too long!

Absorbing and informative.

I enjoy this series because of the sense of place and introduction to rural Irish landscape and history. This was a change of direction as it chose to take us to Newcastle and remain in Dublin City and focus on 21st century issues . For me this 6th novel in the series was not quite as enjoyable as a result but I do feel better informed about sex and gun crime.

As always it was securely written and informative within the framework of Tom Reynolds team. Loose ends were securely tied up by the end of the novel and I do hope it will not be Reynold's final outing.

The narrator's Irish dialects are varied and delightful. I feel she is one of the strongest voice actors I have listened to and one of the reasons I continue to listen to Jo Spain's novels on audible. However male Geordie accents were a challenge too far even for this talented performer.

Super Fan

I absolutely love this series of reads. Tom Reynolds is simply...normal.
He is not an alcoholic, he's happily married, no demons in the closet, he is smart but not in a tortured genius kind of way he's a very steady likeable chap. No grit here.

There is still the usual grizzly goings on, edge of your seat, didn't see it coming drama but you feel in safe hands.

Life is so frustratingly complex and unpredictable. Its nice to escape it now and again and wallow in some wishful reading.

Sometimes the good guys win.
