Summary

Raising a bright and happy child starts during pregnancy and early infancy, when small changes can have a big impact on brain development.

By taking advantage of this golden window of opportunity - when millions of new brain cells are formed every single day - you can help support your child’s IQ, language development, memory, attention span, and emotional regulation. Importantly, the same strategies that nurture these cognitive abilities can also help reduce the odds of autism and ADHD, conditions that now impact 1 in 10 children.

Brain Health from Birth is your guide to this new scientific frontier, explaining which key nutrients may be missing from your prenatal supplement, how to reduce the odds of preterm birth, what to look for in a formula, how to support your baby’s microbiome, and much more.

With contributions from leading obstetricians and pediatricians, science writer Rebecca Fett (author of the best-selling fertility book It Starts with the Egg) brings you practical advice you can start applying today to help your baby thrive.

Brain Health From Birth is a book that should be read by every obstetrician, pediatrician, or woman considering pregnancy. It provides current consolidated knowledge on how to achieve the optimal neurodevelopment of the child to be. I highly recommend this book to all interested in optimal pregnancy outcomes." Most valuable book ever

Really. This book is simply awesome. It saves you hours and hours of research or if you have already made the research, it gives you a great overview. I was reading some negative reviews of the book before I got it. The reviews were saying that the book strikes fear or the research that the book is based on is dodgy. Bullocks. It is really well-collected and presented research and there is so much useful information. The author is totally reasonable in her advice and general attitude. In Europe, things are slightly different than the US where the author is based. However, every single topic is absolutely relevant no matter where you are. Anyway, I like the book. It is informative, not just mentioning topics but delving deep enough into them without overdoing it. It is even educational. It has practical advise, etc.

Great resource for post-conception health

I found the book very interesting indeed, but maybe come mentally prepared if you're a self-confessed control freak, like me. The author points out (at the end!) that some actions will be much more impactful than others, such as avoiding plastic baby bottles and food/drink containers. I know from personal experience that the very process of trying to fully avoid plastic and chemicals in our modern lives can cause a great deal of anxiety of you're already stressed (for whatever reason). The message in the book is "focus on what will have the biggest positive impact to your baby's health and development" and just "be aware of research findings in other areas" but don't fret, for example, about the risk of ADHD/autism increasing by say, 50%, if the risk of ADHD/autism is small in the first place. (A 50% increase to 1% gives just 1.5%!) We can't control everything.

Very interesting read

I enjoyed listening to this book, which comes with a lot of well-structured information, making it easy to get to relevant chapters later on. What I had not been aware of is that this book is about chemicals and nutrients rather than parenting techniques. However, I found it useful, even the earlier chapters about pregnancy, although I am already past my due date, maybe just to reassure myself. Downsides are that the content is very US-centred, and I wonder whether some points are just as relevant in Europe, and the voice is very robotic. Whilst the intonation is normal, the actual voice is awful.

Truly terrible advice and guidance

This book left me totally stressed out and was in no way helpful during my pregnancy. I think books like this can be very dangerous as they offer guidance and advice with little scientific basis. My advice would be to read a book like Cribsheets for helpful guidance and advice based on many hours of research which has been collated to give you an informed overview on many aspects of pregnancy Supplementation, inoculations and child development. I felt I was in safe hands with a book like Cribsheets; this book told me that folic acid and ultrasound scans would could give my baby Autism, which is dangerous and quite frankly rubbish! Do yourself a favour and avoid, pregnancy is stressful enough!
