Summary

Secret societies and civil war....

After Alshari Court Wizard Pentandra survives her third assassination attempt in the Tower of Sorcery, she sends her deputy, Sir Rondal, to investigate the mysterious origins of the attempt while she contends with Alshari court politics. Matters come to a head when he and Kitten rescue an old woman and her grandson from certain death...only to discover she is the lost hedgewitch who gave Pentandra a book of secret prophecies about the future.

The tension rising in southern Alshar seems to break when the Duke and Duchess announce the relocation of the court to the summer capital of Vorone for a season. Pentandra intends to relax and manage her lands for the summer, safely away from assassins and undead.  But her friend and liege, Minalan the Spellmonger, announces that he’s taking the summer off, too, dumping the responsibilities for leadership on her overburdened shoulders while he journeys on an expedition of exploration.  What could possibly go awry?

Within days of the Spellmonger leaving, the Kingdom is plunged into a civil war between the knights of the kingdom, led by Prince Tavard, and the nascent power of the magi, led by Viscount Terleman.  As the battles play out in rapid-fire fashion across Gilmora and the Wilderlands, Pentandra increasingly finds herself losing control of the situation. Not even the return of the Spellmonger from his expedition could be much help, as he has changed in ways that disturb both Pentandra and Ronda....

The only hope for relief and the future of the kingdom now seems to lie in the wrinkled hands of a very old, very wise hedgewitch!

Hedgewitch

Absolutely gripping, first part of book/story catches up and puts Footwizard and All the characters in perspective. What happens whilst Min is away, and the various happenings at home, whilst Min is searching for the Alon armoury. Various rebellions and Tavards meddling, where he finally goes too far. Then takes the storyline of what Min does with the knowledge he has gained. The enshadowed abducts Mins friends and Min starts to plot. I enjoyed book 14. I would certainly say read the previous book Footwizard because it will put Hedgewitch in perspective. Happy reading. Another masterpiece from Terry Mancour. Makes the reader want more.

Another excellent episode of Spellmonger

Running on a time parallel with book 13. Hedgewitch
Concentrates on the developments of Castalshar
Through the perspective of the Alshari court wizard and her deputy.

An excellent book

This was fantastic, we got some insight into different characters rather than just the main one. This book was less heavy than the last one I thought.

The narrator did a great job and I prefer John Lee's voice for the kitten.

A most enjoyable listen.

I can't wait for the next book.

Wonderful book.

This book really ties together the story. I like hearing what the characters were doing when the others were off adventuring. Then combining to one story line. I can't wait till the next book.

Great struggle continue

Another piece of great storytelling. This one is more of going ons under the rock in Vanador. From wie point of Pentandra, Rondal and Antimei. Events in kingdom get quit out of Pentandra's capable hands while Minalan is on holiday, he returns to find new challenges and rotting enemy making big problems for him.

Page Turner!

I cannot stress enough how much I enjoyed this book!

First, I would like to praise John Lee for another wonderful narration! He, unlike many other audio narrators, actually puts the time and effort to go the distance! He voices each character with his or her own unique voice, as well as adding extra substance to characters speech, for example, if a character is tired he will pant out the speech. Very few other audio narrators do such a thing. This helps us, the listener to be more immersed in the story than before!

As for the story, the main bulk of the story is after Minalan leaves Vanador and heads towards the Jevolar. From there we see how Penny dealed with a realm without a way to contact the mighty Spellmonger, even mind-to-mind. It's increadibly fun to read; we see how Terl basically conquered almost all of Gilmora, and how Prince Tavard responded. We see how the relationship between Gatina and Rondal has matured and possibly what their future will look like. We also get to see Penny lose her mind as she tries her level best to keep the Kingdom together just long enough for the Spellmonger to come back.

As for the ending! This ending shattered the world! Or at least the power balance between the Kingdom and the Alka Alon Council! It was so fun to read/listen too!

Absolutely brilliant

Loved the combining of two storylines and the light that is cast on more than the main character. Superbly written, produced and delivered. This series of books just keeps getting better each time. Roll on the next one.

Best book in the series since necromancer

Although the book is not told from Minalan’s perspective it is essential to the continuation of the story. Unlike other side-character books, it is not superfluous or uninteresting. I’m very pleased with the new addition to the series and am looking forward to book 15!

Nothing happens.

I just finished this book and I’ve got to say while it’s nice to visit with the lovely characters this is a classic filler book.

Looking forward to the next in the series and it’s a worthy listen but don’t expect great happenings.

Simply stunning!

There is only one other epic series that I have been truly invested in, or rather addicted to in this way. From the release of the first book I devour every moment of this brilliant saga and my only complaint is that now I am back to the yearning as I am forced to wait for the next release. Terry Mancour is a genius and John Lee is masterfully brings the characters to life with his narration.

A breakthrough in the history of writing

Why not? This book is exceptional Terry Mancour and for each of the genres he throughly and wonderful trespasses on. I have no doubt his goal was simply to tell a good tell, but this book and book 13 are as good Sci-fi, fantasy, mystery, horror, historical fiction, some real quantum physics (my job) magic realism, and revenge-like-Eastwood. The author is on a real roll here and I can not stress how good a story this is and how well it is told. I can’t say why because I’d only be revealing all the surprise. On the surface is a running discourse on prediction of future events, but the events of the story unfold to undermine the technique to criticize used to analyze prediction itself - except in one way Minalan’s mind. I read it straight through and then listened to it. Then wanted more. I always want more, but this time, it burns (to borrow a phrase). This is as good as it gets. John Lee is amazing as well, Terry do not replace him.

Good book, good performance.

Decent story progression good voice acting. Seems like the books are getting shorter and more expensive, i am enjoying the conflict but it is recounting alot of the last book from another point of view. Book should have been longer for that reason alone but thats the only fault. Well enjoyed.

Cliffhanger...

Terry's best cliffhanger ending yet. John Lee knock it out of the park per his usual. Penny realizing she is going to have to see Ron as more than a mere child was gratifying. My heart goes out to Ron. This is Ron shining and really coming into his own. Penny will forever be my favorite and I empathize with her trying to stop all the fighting. Terl's story makes me smile and say I knew it! This book covers so much. It has been the perfect set up book for Fifteen. These are must reads or listens books. Terry Mancour has truly created a unique and enthralling world. Filled with relatable, charming, good people or beings just trying to do their best.

Classic Filler Book

I love the characters and world of the Spellmonger series. This book is essential if you’re progressing through the series but it’s a case study in a book in an epic series where the author is simply positioning people for later events. When there are significant conflicts built up across chapters, they are resolved out of frame or pushed off to the next book.

This book is the split-off of of events parallel to footwizard. Unfortunately it doesn’t stand on its own very well. Hopefully Mancour doesn’t continue to follow this path for the rest of the series.
