About this listen
Winner of the August Derleth award, Last Days is a chilling and terrifying novel from master of horror Adam Nevill.
The Temple of the Last Days. The brutal cult with a history of murder, sex and occult dealings destroyed itself during one night of ritualistic violence decades ago. Or so they thought....
Kyle Freeman is an indie filmmaker with no money and few options, so when he lands a commission to make a documentary about The Temple of the Last Days he jumps at the chance. Little does he know that his investigation into the cult's bloody history will lead him into the darkest places he's ever been. As they travel from London and France to Arizona tracing the path of the cult, uncanny events, out-of-body experiences, ghastly artefacts and visits by the merciless 'old friends' plague Kyle and his one-man crew. They soon discover the power of the cult's terrible legacy and that it may be too late for them to escape....

“His previous novel was the superb The Ritual, but with Last Days he's gone one better. This is riveting, and Nevill is fast becoming Britain's answer to Stephen King.” (The Guardian)
“Taking its cue from real-life cults Last Days is an effectively creepy novel that will leave you sleeping with the lights on.” (SFX)

Enjoyable Adam Nevill!
Not as credible as The Ritual or Apartment 16 but enjoyable none the less!

Epic!
God, this was so immersive! not only was it a feast of words that was so enjoyable to listen to; but it was epic in depth of story. I was bereft when it ended. This is a fantastic listen!

A bit long winded
A bit long winded for me. The story was good, ending was not my kind of thing.
First book I’ve not enjoyed on Audible, shame really as it could have be half the length and a good book.
But just my opinion.

Ruined by narrator
I really should have returned this but I was filled with ennui. The story is passable even if the characters have absolutely zero internal lives but the whole experience was ruined by the narrator. Everything from the nasal, thin tone of his voice to his utter inability to distinguish between the two lead characters; apparently a young film director and aged film producer can share the same exact voice. And I won't even go into his inability to pronounce certain words (listen to his 'raison d'etre) or terrible French... accent, if we're to call it that. I will have to make a note to check and avoid anything narrated by this person in future.

brilliant cult horror
There is a review for this book that slams the narrator. DO NOT LISTEN TO THAT REVIEW. The voice actor for this book is actually very good and jumps very well between accents and character voices.
Another great Book from this author, loved it.

Winter Companions, Lost In Their Overcoats
Helter skelter ride into the night from weird-horror maestro, Adam Nevill. Mixing the slow-burn occult dread of The Omen with the apocalyptic narcissism of Jim Jones and Charlie Manson, this novel charts a path from witchcraft and atrocity in Medieval Europe to incipient evil in contemporary L.A.
'Last Days' is a well-written and engaging story although the characterisation can be a little sketchy and the pacing slightly off. The book builds a heady atmosphere, but at a leisurely stroll via several vaguely repetitious set-pieces (with an adrenaline rush at the end for the unexpectedly guns-blazing finale). Nevill succeeds best in his description of damnation and the damned: there is a terrible relish to his evocation of physical and spiritual degradation (the 'Old Friends', newly incarnate in their diseased amniotic sacs, or the 'Swine Bishop,' were particularly horrible).
Without spoilering anything, I also liked Nevill's cheeky ending. Had it gone another way the book would have been ruined for me.
Narrator Chris Devon has a thin, reedy voice that put me in mind of Adrian Mole. He also mispronounces a few things to unfortunate effect: to be a dreadful snob, his pronunciation of W.B. Yeets and Hair-O-Dote-Us (Herodotus) really made me smile and broke the mood. I struggled with his delivery at first but, after a while, he began to grow on me. His voice is not dissimilar to Jon Ronson or Andy Nyman ('Ghost Stories'), both of whom seem appropriate to the subject matter here.
