Summary

Featuring his famous literary Detective Atticus Pund and Susan Ryeland, hero of the worldwide best seller Magpie Murders, a brilliantly brain-teasing literary thriller by Anthony Horowitz. The follow-up to Magpie Murders.

Retired publisher Susan Ryeland is living the good life. She is running a small hotel on a Greek island with her long-term boyfriend, Andreas. It should be everything she's always wanted - but is it? She's exhausted with the responsibilities of making everything work on an island where nothing ever does, and truth be told she's beginning to miss her old life in London.

And then a couple - the Trehearnes - come to stay, and the story they tell about an unfortunate murder that took place on the same day and in the same hotel in which their daughter was married is such a strange and mysterious one that Susan finds herself increasingly fascinated by it. And when the Trehearnes tell her that their daughter is now missing, Susan knows that she must return to London and find out what really happened....

preferred previous books narrator

last book was narrated by Samantha Bond who was much better for this series, more nuance, humour and sympathy. This performance was 2 dimensional.

Book itself was similar to Magpie Murders - Atticus Pund book within a book. All clever, perhaps too much emphasis on revealing every clever clue.

Clever

An intriguing intertwining of an investigation of a missing person and the plot of a fictional novel. I enjoyed the twists and turns and parallels between the two stories. The final exposure of the culprit is a bit long winded but in the tradition of Agatha Christie denouements.

Extraordinarily good.

I read Magpie Murders 4 years ago so when my daughter said there was a follow up book, I thought great and as I started reading Moonflower Murders the first book started coming back to me, I say reading but of course I was listening and the narrators were brilliant. I did have to take down notes in my iPad-notes as there were more character that my 71 year old brain could cope with. A really clever story and downloaded another of Horowitz books straight away.

Another brilliant book

very well read and brilliantly written. Everything intertwines but it's not complicated to follow. now in search for another by the same author.

I had eagerly awaited this book and was not disappointed. Narration was excellent also.

Narration is over-passionate

Much too vehement a performance by Lesley Manville - and I'm only an hour into the book. There is no no nuance if you are passionate all the time … A great shame, as Anthony Horowitz is such a great writer.

Loved it,a story within a story.

Very cleverly written, had me gripped from the beginning. Couldn't wait to not only find out whodunnit but enjoyed the journey of Susan it discovering the truth.

Excellent book. Highly recommended

I'm a huge Anthony Horowitz fan and hope he'll write more like this. Kept me entertained and interested during many happy hours of gardening

A book of 2 halves

I read The Magpie Murders and enjoyed it very much so I tried this one. I enjoyed this also but I got the same feeling as last time. Although it’s a really good idea, this 2 books/halves thing, I find that I really enjoy the real life/ real time element but don’t actually enjoy the Atticus Punt element. I find all the real life characters believable and interesting and the descriptions of place and the investigations engaging. But the Atticus Punt bits just bore me a bit because, to me, he feels like a poor man’s Poirot. I just drift off and can’t concentrate so I think this must be my last book. This is a shame because I like Susan and Andreas etc so much and would like to know how their lives pan out. If you haven’t read any of these it won’t make any sense so I think everyone should give it a go because you could love the whole thing. Really well written and narrated.
