About this listen

An unstoppable curse. A dead man displaced from his time. How do you survive the zombie apocalypse when you started it?

Digby Graves, a deceased medieval peasant with delusions of grandeur, is trying to figure out how the hell he ended up in Seattle eight hundred years after his death. Also, why does he have necrotic magic coursing through his zombified body? Added to that is the fact that he made a terrible first impression the moment he woke up by lunging at the first person that came into biting range.

Now, the curse he unleashed is loose in the world. Digby has a target on his back and only fragmented memories of his death. He needs to survive long enough to put the pieces back together, learn what it means to lead the horde, and master his power over the dead. Digby might even find a few accomplices along the way, if he can hold off on eating them.

The end of the world is gonna get weird.

suprisingly good

I actually enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. I wasn't to sure it would be my kind of book going through the first chapters but along the way it really drew me in. Both the writing and the narration are in point, well done!

Fun Zombie Romp

This book is exactly like the cover suggests it's going to be - it's a fun zombie romp, leaning more into adventure than horror.

Basic summary: a dude from the middle ages gets turned into a zombie and wakes up in slightly-future America (tech is a bit more advanced, but only by maybe 30 years or so). He unintentionally starts a zombie outbreak when he bites someone, and then story goes on from there. There are lots of powers, not too many stat pages (good for audio) and some really creative uses to the abilities that the MC is given.

There were some issues with the book, to be sure (the MC is a jerk for most of the book, and not in a good way, and the flashbacks are annoying), but the story was just so much fun that these were easy to ignore. I found myself wanting to listen to this story at every opportunity I could, even if I could only put in my headphones for a couple of minutes. This adventure reeled me in... I just wanted more, more more. If you like fun, light-hearted romps with a dash of zombie, this one is for you.

Came for apocalypse, stayed for awesome characters

Creative premise, good writing and solid story.

I have little to mope about in regards to this book!

Solid on writing, story, characters, no tropes or uber-power fantasy.

The main character is bit of a 'puckish rogue' anti-hero, maybe a little bit arrogant, but always in a fun way, never annoying.

Its not the next Asimov or anything, but damned if its not a solid entertaining story.

I have all the books in series, so this is a review of all of them

I am writing this review on my second listen, and while I thought they were great the first time, a few issues did show up, but that’s to be expected when I already know the juicy points.

The good points first:
Firstly, the narration is great. Nothing bad to say about it. The narrator has great vocal range and that makes it easy to understand who is talking. This is a personal opinion and some people will like a narration while others don’t.

Secondly, the powers are amazing. They are greatly done and you feel the character getting stronger without getting completely OP. The MC is also a necromancer done right. The powers are believable while not just taking powers out of thin air, but “grounded” for lack of a better description without using examples or spoilers

Thirdly(minor spoiler) the story has a clear progression with the different books taking place in different geographical areas as the protagonist fights his way through the apocalypse.
The characters are also pretty funny, while retaining their seriousness.

The bad:
It does feel a bit slow on the second listen, but that might just be because i knew what was going to happen. That said, for this entire book, hardly any time passes, which means not much of the plot gets shown. I think it’s first on the 3 book the plot starts to thicken. That might be a bad thing for some, but it also means loads of time for just the juicy standard apocalypse stuff many people like.

I gave it 4 stars because I know the dries gets better down the line, but for a stand-alone it would probably only get a 3. I recommend you buy this one if you are a fan of litrpg and apocalypse settings and if you are looking for a series to listen to. Don’t buy it if you just plan to buy this single first book.
