Summary

The fae are real, and Hetta Valstar is trying her best to marry one.

If Hetta and Wyn ever manage to marry, it will be the first union between Faerie and Mortal since the Iron Law was revoked. The mortal Queen has given them her blessing - sort of. Now, Wyn needs permission from the fae High King.

There’s an intensely personal reason why they need to tie the knot as soon as possible, and time is not on their side. The clock is ticking. Except in Wyn’s home court, which is trapped under magical stasis. To break the spell will mean venturing into the deepest realms of Faerie, where even fae princes - and definitely human lords - fear to tread.

Unfortunately, the fae problems aren’t limited to Faerie. Public tension is rising, and the reveal of Wyn’s true identity makes him and Hetta the centre of the storm. On top of this, Stariel’s magic is going haywire, and Hetta is struggling with her intensifying powers - and she might not be the only one affected.

The High King might be the only one who can help, since he’s responsible for the fae returning to the Mortal Realm in the first place.

If only they knew where he was.

Change of narrator??

I feel like not so much care was taken when publishing this final instalment of this story. The chapter titles are not included like the first 3. The change of narrator in my opinion is dreadful. The characters don’t sound like themselves and there is little to inflection when they ‘speak’ all the male characters shout everything. If the story was not so good I would not have struggled through this. If you are able to I would read the entire series and not bother with the Audible version. Such a shame.

fitting conclusion to the final chapter of story

whilst I have enjoyed the overall storytelling, the building of characters etc. this last book was disappointing in its narration. the change of narrator showed a marked lack of emotion and breadth of performance of the previous narrator. too clipped and characters could not be distinguished as easily.
The series as a whole was entertaining and this kept me wanting to know more.

Enjoyable lighthearted escapism

A fresh plot, and expressive narration rather spoilt by what I assumed were mis-pronounciations, cachet not cache, iron fillings not iron filings, etc etc, these sometimes became so regular that they distracted me completely from the plot.

Give the narrator a break!

A satisfying conclusion to the series. Daft to change narrator for the final one but really, when you put that to one side, she does a good job. Gets more confident as she goes through. If she’d done the whole series no one would be really complaining.

Why change narrator?

the change of narrator makes absolutely zero sense and made it incredibly difficult to get through this book. why would you change for the final book? her performance was fine, but it did feel rushed in some places with pauses not where one would expect. I'm sure she's a reasonable narrator but it's a jarring break after 3 books. it changes so much about the tone and interpretation of the characters and is distracting.

why?

I love this saga but why change the voice actor after so many books? Fifty Williams does the voices perfectly, you knew who each character was without her having to say. All the men in this book sound like the same person so it's hard to follow who is talking. I may have to read the next book as I don't think I can listen to this narrator again. My frustration is only because a narrator was established for many books and to interject a new one was ludicrous. This new actor, unfortunately could never fill Finty's shoes

Enjoyed less than books 1-3

The change of storyteller affected my overall enjoyment of this book. I had grown used to & really liked the narrator in Books 1-3.
Fiona Hardingam’s performance was excellent but the change of voices and accents for the characters made Book 4 a slight disappointment!! It’s like when you watch a long standing tv series abs then all of a sudden a character is played by a different actor and you’re supposed to pretend it’s the same person !!!!

Fabulous

Loved it although it took a few chapters to get used to the new reader.

Great story; terrible narration

Amazing story but really terrible narration. It’s read like a news report rather than a novel. I only persevered because I loved the other 3 installments

Disappointing narration

What a shame Finty Williams has not narrated this book as she did the first three. It has been sadly let down by a stilted and simpering narrator.
