Summary

Gower Street, London, 1882: Sidney Grice, London's most famous personal detective, is expecting a visitor. He drains his fifth pot of morning tea, and glances outside, where a young, plain woman picks her way between the piles of horse-dung towards his front door. Sidney Grice shudders. For heaven's sake - she is wearing brown shoes. The Mangle Street Murders is for those who like their crime original, atmospheric, and very, very funny.

Critic reviews

"One of the most delightful and original new novels of the year, this is the first in a series that could well become a cult. Grice and Middleton promise to become a positive treat. Catch them now." ( Daily Mail)

the mangle street murders.

Any additional comments?

when I bought this story there wasn't any reviews but the tag line was very, very, funny this was right up my street. having enjoyed Bryant and may stories I was looking forward to this new series. personally I didn't find the story funny at all and so was disappointed in that respect but decided to treat it as an ordinary crime story set the Victorian era. that is what my star rating is based on.
I have already bought the following 2 books and will give them a try.
emma Gregory did a reasonable job of performing the book.

Did I laugh out loud? Nope!

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Well crafted and well performed but not 'laugh out loud ' funny as promised. The protagonist was hard to like and the situationsurrounding quite grim with the sheen of satire to redeem it. It's not 'Dirk Gently ' but a pretty good story despite the lack of smirks!

A little obvious but well done.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I think the whole "Sydney Grice is the man Conan-Doyle based Holmes on" is a little tired but the genuine harshness of justice in a Victorian London saves the story, along with the female leads slowly unfurling mysterious past. The Character Grice's insensitive and matter of fact outlook on humanity grates a little but I did enjoy the story as a whole. It won't change your life but it's a good way to pass time.

What about Emma Gregory’s performance did you like?

Very good.

Not as good as anticipated

Would you try another book written by M. R. C. Kasasian or narrated by Emma Gregory?

Narrator was good, but I felt that the story could have been better

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

It was a bit, oh, right, the end

What does Emma Gregory bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Good characterisation

Did The Mangle Street Murders inspire you to do anything?

No

Any additional comments?

Narration was good, but the story could have been better. It chugged along, but I wasn't that bothered about what happened in the end. I'll try another one of this series to see if it's any better, but I think there are better books set in this era out there

Quippy Sherlock Holmes clone heavy on misogyny...

...which seems to be the idea, but the story suffers as a result.

This is a Victorian era detective story revolving around a number of suspiciously similar killings on a London street, which teams an eccentric male detective with a strong female companion. This is a tongue in cheek Sherlock Holmes pastiche that displays its influences proudly, making both clear joking references to the Holmes canon and borrowing liberally from it's core character base (eccentric genius, the army doctor assistant/biographer, quirky housekeeper, the often put down police officer etc).

The selling point to differentiate this story from other Holmes copies is the female lead, serving to highlight the rise of feminism in the victorian era and show that women are indeed the intellectual equals of men. This is a fine idea, but the story ultimately suffers because of it's execution.

The detective Sidney Grice is so incredibly unlikeable and contrarian that it is hard to buy into his "genius" through the initial 3/4s of the book as none of this theories are fully explained, and all of his interactions become painful due to constant quips and heaps of misogyny - I stopped listening to this story several times unsure if I could persevere through it!

I know the author is trying to make a point but we are beaten over the head with it so often that the story ultimately flounders, and while the story ends with a nod to the ladies, the completion of the mystery is lacklustre and disappointing.

This may be the difficult set up for a well rounded series, but I will not be reading to find out. The book certainly divides opinion in the other reviews and I can see why!

Fascinating!

I so enjoyed listening to this story. Gory in places but the clue is in the title! Beautifully narrated by Emma Gregory. Very much looking forward to listening to the next in the series.

Great characters - Holmes with a Migrane

An original approach to the private (personal) detective investigations - Sherlock type character who knows how to be obnoxious with everyone he meets. Loved it.

good story well told

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed it more as time went on, both characters annoyed me and both mellowed with time. It was certainly a pastiche of Sherlock Holmes but an enjoyable one. I expect a TV series one day.
